This was my favorite book in 2024 by far (and I read a lot of of-the-moment fiction). Growing up middle class and with parents in the service industry, the financial strain on a family is so real.

I didn’t read the Grimm fairy tale before reading this so I’m sure there’s things I missed, but the writing was so fantastic that I quite literally kept reading in my bookstore and finished it in two days.

Descriptions of the characters made it easy to picture them, inside and out.  The main character and her sister were frustratingly hard headed at times, you wanted to yell at them through the book.. but that was kind of the point. None of the characters were really likeable.  It started out pretty slow, and picked up speed in a big way at the end. All that being said, after the second half I really couldn't put it down and had to find out what happened.  A very good, frustrating read!

I was hoping the Bear was a hyperbole for something but no. It was a real freaking bear and it ended as expected. Humans suck. I did like that it was in the PNW.
Upon further reflection, I’m mad at the sister for feeding the bear. I’m mad at Sam for not leaving and also sticking with Ben. He wants to live with her but can’t even lend her $50 bucks. What the heck. I’m glad she is chasing her dreams in the end but it seems like she had no other option. It was a sad way to end her relationship with her sister.
