This book is about America wondering if she is worthy enough to be a Queen. America doubts herself. Maxon and Aspen's love for America, competition between the girls, intrusion on the palace by the rebels, etc. However, America is finally stepping out and fighting for her love.

fav quotes
" All I want is your promise to say with me to be mine. Sometimes it feels like you can't possibly be real. Promise me you'll stay." pg 81 Maxon

"Soon, when it's proper for me to end the selection, when I propose to you, I want it to be easy as breathing for you to say yes, I promise to do everything in my power between now and that moment to make it that way. Anything you need, anything you want, say the words. I will do everything I can for you." p.g 81 Maxon

I liked this book just as much as the first one, and especially liked the rebel plot line. Intriguing!

I think this book is technically better than the first one, but I liked it less.

Making a dystopian setting and then focusing on that as part of the main plot, but also then having to dance around the idea that our characters can fight for change...a lot of it is weird. I don't think you can write a dystopian universe if you're not willing to allow radical changes. But that's probably more of my own politics that's butting into my enjoyment of the story. That being said, we do get more focus on politics in this book compared to the first. Maybe, imo, to it's own detriment, but I suppose I appreciate the effort.

As for Aspen and Maxon. I don't really hate Aspen, but I don't care about him either. It's hard to be invested when it's pretty obvious she'll choose Maxon. Also, she's still sneaking off with Aspen and I'm like WHAT? I know Maxson is also seeing multiple girls, but at least America knows that! Maxon has no idea about Aspen. And more importantly, she's committing treason! She could get herself and Aspen killed! What are these two doing!

Onto Maxon; I liked him a lot more in the first book. I sorta got this vibe in the 1st as well, but it's become very obvious in the sequel: Maxon is never in the wrong in their fights. It's always America who lashes out and has to apologize. He talks about how America gets upset with him too often and then doesn't listen to him, but multiple times now Maxon has ended an argument by basically saying "well I'm the prince and you're poor so shut up" ??? It's always "let's do things my way. Why cant you just trust me?" and never "why don't we brainstorm together". I know he has more experience here but um! Perhaps the person who has to live in the shitty society that your forefathers built actually has some valid thoughts about how things should change! I just kinda want to see Maxon be...flawed. And flawed in a way where the author/story actually acknowledges it.

Anyway, Aspen is boring, Maxon sucks, the politics are meh at best. Maybe I'm being too harsh for a YA novel but I've read YA novels before that didn't bother me as much.
