I can see why everyone has been reading this one! It was a good mix of lighthearted fun and important social justice. When the characters did discuss something important, like chosen family, classism, cultural appropriation, and trans rights, it was done in an easy, simple manner. I love when major topics are seamlessly woven into a larger narrative like this; a door is opened for further thought, but it doesn’t stop the story in its tracks. This narrator (like
the author) is Latinx and trans, and I’m loving that representation! I enjoyed the unique voices for each character, and they were really brought to life. This could make such a good movie, and I got strong Coco vibes, if Coco was older and trans. I hope there’s a sequel some day!

I JUST FINISHED READING IT AND I LOVED IT SO MUCH OMG. The representation was so good, so was the storyline and the story itself. I could really relate to the characters. Even though I already suspected what the plot twist would be somewhere in the middle of the book, it still had me on the edge of my seat while reading. It was so well-written and just amazing.
I definitely recommend!!

An astounding book with no shortage of heart-wrenching teen drama. Yadriel is a brujo, one of the male members of a necromantic tradition stretching back to pre-colonial Central America. He is also transgender and accidentally falls in love with the first spirit he raises, Julian. With the backdrop of a mysterious death in the brujo community and the possibility that Julian's death is linked, I literally burned the midnight oil to read the end of this book.

I just didn’t find this book engaging. I think the story would’ve benefited from being 1st person from Yadriel’s POV instead of 3rd person. Love the diversity and a lot of the concepts just didn’t feel like it was executed as well as it could’ve been.
