This book definitely shone in how real the characters and their relationships with one another felt, as well as how rich and descriptive the writing was, especially when it came to showing Latinx religion and culture. However, for about 60-70% of this book I wasn't really looking forward to picking it back up when I put it down for the day. I think this was because the pacing of this portion of the book was VERY slow (due in part to repeating information), and in the beginning it was quite info-dumpy. For this reason, I was looking at giving this a 3.5 stars but the ending really got to me.

While the initial conflict of the ending felt anticlimactic,
the resurrection conflict totally gripped me
. The ending also had me completely taken by Yadriel and Julian's relationship and how fiercely they loved each other. Finally, I found the epilogue really moving. These three elements cemented this book as a 4 star.

I absolutely fell in love with the characters, there were multiple times i had to put the book down and run around my living room before coming back to it.
I felt so seen in Yadriel's anxious tendencies, but the bigger surprise for me was recognizing the struggles i had as a teenager with ADHD reflected in Julian. Full of energy and quick to anger, just like I was at that age!
The trans representation meant a lot to me. There are details of some struggles but also a lot of love and support! And reading about the ups and downs Yadriel has with his Latinx family felt like coming home.
It took me a few chapters to get sucked in, but once I did I couldn't put it down!

I loved this book so much! It's so charming and entertaining, and I absolutely fell in love with the characters. This book balances so many things so well, and I'm very glad I got to read it. I hope there's a sequel soon! (Note: I'm only saying that because the author said he might write more; the ending is entirely complete and satisfactory.)
