Perhaps a bit affected at times, this was a delightful excursion through a world of hipster ennui, the sardonic lovechild of Big City, Bright Lights and Catcher in the Rye.

would have gotten a four but too patchy. i enjoyed the second part the most. the first felt far too fragmented (it was making a point sure). it was definitely funny at points but it’s semantic worldbuilding was a tad too cringey. a bit out of touch too. some relatable parts, some witticisms too.

"I don't go to concerts, I go to shows"
"It's obscure, you've probably never heard of it"
"I'll have an iced mocha soy frap with non-dairy whip and splenda"
Pardon me, I've just thrown up in my mouth a little bit.

At the time (early 90s?), I was pretty entertained by this book. Pop culture references, hip and easy style. I don't think it would speak to me in the same way today. But I did go on to read (almost) every other Coupland book I could find.
