AZARAN was a quick read and I liked the concept of the dragon riders and the Brotherhood but unfortunately, the writing just wasn't very strong. It's pretty much all telling with little showing and the characters come across as very flat. There were definitely high points in the story itself - the cute mini dragons, the family dynamic - but overall, it was just an ok read. This is my second book by Jackie James and I think her writing is just not for me.

3.5 stars - Cute and fierce dragons

I liked the dragon action and thought the whole concept of these magical dragons interesting. Other than some tension between Azaran and Toby in the beginning their relationship was fast and easy. This book was more setup for the rest of the series. The tone was light even with the conflicts.

A great new series! Different to anything I've read before and an interesting take on Dragon Riders. I love the connection that they have to their dragons and that they also have their own personalities.
Four brothers make up the group of Dragon Riders in this series and we focus on the eldest, Azaran.
He has done so much and never thought about meeting his mate, until Toby turns up in his life. The two men make for an interesting read as they have new experiences; Azaran fighting a mate and Toby's discovery of a whole new world.
Jacki has done an amazing job of introducing us to this world, so well described that I could clearly imagine flying on the back of the dragon's and the beautiful setting they lived in. Four great brothers who clearly have a close relationship and I'm excited to see where this series takes us. There is an overall story arc so I would definitely recommend reading the books in order and we are left with a tantalising tease of an epilogue.
Brilliant new series, a definite recommendation. Just wish it could have been longer with maybe some more relationship developments.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This was a nice start to a new series but as they often do there was a bit of the book spent on world building. There were some little questions I still had at the end but there is the hope that they will be answered in the other books. I loved these dragons, they are adorable and I think it is fascinating how they can shift into different forms and how different each dragon seems to be.

I really liked Toby, he is so sweet and really just wants to help people. I hate seeing that he was being stifled in his job and then when Azaram was ignoring him. Now, unfortunately Azaran didn’t do much to improve my opinion of him throughout the story. I could see that he is dedicated to his family and what they do as dragon riders but I hated his assumption that a mate would be more work for him and how he continued to hurt Toby with his actions and I had a lot of trouble accepting his sudden flip of feelings towards Toby that finally got them together. It seems there connection is solid but it was just one of those times where one action just doesn’t out weight the others.

The cover art by Jay Aheer is great and I love the picture of Sindri in her warrior form.

Two reasons I even got his far: I couldn't decide what else to read, and because at first I found the idea of the story (or some part of it) intriguing. Unfortunately I didn't like the execution at all.
