I loved this feminist fantasy that reads like Harry Potter for adults. Lucky is a young Metis woman who has not gotten much of a break. She lives in Toronto with a delightful but challenging grandmother; pines for a man who doesn't notice her; and hates her dead-end job. But, then, she finds a spoon—and everything changes, and she's on a quest to discover the coven of witches in Salem, the seventh spoon, and her true identity.

Well this is a fun one! Seems to be the first of more. Witchy with lots of strong women, but also diverse and about love from all ages and angles.

If you’re looking for an awesome feminist witchy story this is for you. I loved the main characters Lucky St. James and her grandma Stella. I loved the dialogue and the relationship between the two women. This was my second Cherie Dimaline novel and the second I’ve listened to on audio narrated by the fabulous and talented Michelle St. John.

Okay this is either 2.75 or 3 stars havent fully decided yet (prob 2.75) but lets just say I was kind of disappointed. Like the book just felt flat and I didnt care about any of the characters or their end goals it all felt so predictable in a way. I really did not like the ending it felt lackluster and boring. I figured out pretty early on the solution to this wild goose chase they went on so I didnt really care about it too much. So anyways would prob not recommend this!

There are a number of things about this book that didn’t really work for me. First, I think in general this urban somewhat cozy fantasy genre just isn’t really for me, I just don’t find it compelling. There were some character moments I enjoyed — I liked seeing how all the witches found their spoons and the main character had a fun dynamic with her grandmother — but overall the dialogue and character work felt shallow. This whole book is also a quest to bring a coven of witches together but it’s never really explained why that matters so it felt pretty low stakes. Lastly, the villain’s main course of action is just to brainwash random women he meets into having sex with him and it was both gross and misplaced tonally with the rest of the book.

I was really into the start of this book but it really jumped the shark, probably right around the line “universal symbol of big balls.” Which, yikes.
