I like the story, and George's talent for storylines, development, and excellent bittersweet endings are all here.
The difference with "A Song of Ice and Fire" is that the narration is third person omnipotent, so is really hard to connect emotionally with the characters, we are told sad things and it feels like if it was developed in a longer book with more of a personal approach I would have felt really heartbroken.
In this case, too much happens and the narrator tells us but, it feels far away and disconnected, we are not there.
I enjoyed the story but I think that the comparison with the ASOIAF series and the expectations because of it, made it tricky for me. One day a second read will give me more clarity about this book.

It didn't take me long to get interested in the book. I haven't read anything else by Martin but I can assure you I will be. This book had a nice story that seemed like it could be expanded so much more, but I liked it being a short book. It also had a nice ending. Peaceful but also sad
For a "children's book" (I wouldn't recommend it below 7 or 8), this a surprisingly deep and thought provoking book.
