A treasure

This was an absolute gem of a read! I highly recommend it to every fan of fantasy and dragons! It reads just like a fairytale!

More a fairy tale than a middle grade novel. A short nicely paced, easy read. Not particularly upbeat but not as depressing as he usually writes.

It surprised me that the characters were lacking. In his adult books, Martin's strength is his fantastic characters. He can make me care about a throw away character in a single chapter.

I did like how odd she was, the winter child, with her strangeness and fondness for the cold.
SpoilerIt's a shame that he went and normalized her in the end. I'd have rather she flew off with the dragon. But I suppose he was going for a somewhat happier ending. (For him. The dragon still died.)

This was really charming and surprisingly fast paced and intriguing. This is basically just a fairytale in 7 chapters and I didn't expect the ending to happen the way it did. I loved the illustrations in general although Adara looked a little weird to me (like I can't explain it but it just feels off).

I had a great time with this and I could see myself rereading this next winter as well.

My 9yo really enjoyed it. My 6yo son did not. I thought it was alright.
