The first 2 thirds of the book could have easily been condensed down, and the ACTUAL start should have been the ending. A whole lot of build up just to end when the magic starts happening.

Pace is very slow, just not getting into it
This author usually builds suspense and tense from page two on, this book was a dull slog. Even at the very end when it could have ramped up, it fizzled. So disappointing. I won't be reading the sequel.

Wowza. A slow burn of a novel as Mr. Bacigalupi takes his time to build every element of this story. It feels very old-fashioned, a la Dickens, but well worth the effort and time it takes to read. Once the plot twists the first time, all you can do is sit back and marvel at the masterpiece that is NAVOLA.
