This book was super cute! Much like the first one, I thought the characters were very sweet and I enjoyed the overall story. I especially liked the different family dynamics that the author explored as well as how hockey can strain relationships.

At the same time, there were a few different plots going on that seemed to get wrapped up very quickly. It wasn't that big of a distraction, but I was something that left me wanting more. Overall, a fun read.

I liked this book, but it fell a little short compared to the others. However, it was still a good read that had me up until 5 am. The plot just felt oddly rushed and slow at the same time. I would have loved to spend a little more time with the characters off the rink. I know it's a book about hockey, but this one seemed to have a bit more technical jargon that had me skimming a few sections. That's just a personal preference, though. I'm sure those who know hockey a bit better enjoyed those bits! Either way, I still had fun spending time with Nico and Ryan!

Overall, I did really enjoy this book, it just ended up being more angsty than I anticipated (especially having read the first book in the series). For a long time, I felt as miserable and hopeless as the players on Indy's mismanaged hockey team. There was a point where I got sick of everything going wrong & felt as frustrated as the players must feel, just as desperate for something to change. BUT, the ending was really well done, and the authors did a good job solving the angst.

Likes:
  • Ryan and Nico are really good together. I especially adored Ryan learning how to make Nico's special jam tea & repeatedly making it for him throughout the book.
  • Ryan and Nico playing chess together throughout the book, and how chess comes up at so many pivotal moments in their relationship
  • Overall, the plot with the sucky coach [etc, redacted]
  • Ryan & Nico's relationships with the other people in their life. I especially enjoyed Ryan's relationship with his sister & Nico's with his BFF.
  • good character development! esp:
    • Nico's character arc re: his relationship with his dad. (Not diving into what I liked about it, because spoilers)
    • Ryan's character arc re: learning to take risks & go after what he wants
  • The way the major relationship drama is handled & processed. I appreciated that the characters take the necessary time and are mature and healthy.
  • The use of hockey articles to further the narrative/tell the reader big things that are happening

Dislikes:
  • This might be petty, but the chapter style is soooo hard to navigate on an ebook. Instead of traditional chapters, it's only broken up by a few sections (Puck drop, 1st/2nd/3rd period, overtime, post-game). While I liked that structure for the book & was a cute way to break the novel into sections & theme it with hockey, it made it SO HARD to try to go back to a previous scene for reference or a reread, because the "chapters" are really long, and scenes get lost in them. I found myself having to bookmark scenes I thought would be important so I had some hope of finding them later. Also, it made it harder to keep track of whose POV I was reading. I think a better solution would have been to break the book into the cutesy sections & have traditional chapters separated with headings and POV switches within the sections.
  •  It was obvious from the very beginning that the coach was the biggest problem with the team. As the book progressed, the nature of how, exactly, the coach is bad changes, which was good, but the plot point drug on SO LONG. It was SO OBVIOUS what the problems were, and nothing was getting better -- in fact, a lot of things kept getting worse. I felt as frustrated as the players, and equally hopeless. It just got a bit more depressing than I was expecting.
  • I have a couple of unanswered questions, namely:
how did the coach and gm get caught??? Also, what happens to the other plays in Indy? Is the team (and the players) okay?

Ratings:
Spice: 3
Ease: 3.5,

Overall: 3.75
