The text is beautiful. The pictures (from the 1960s) to my eyes viewing them in 2023 look dated — this would be an even lovelier book if they could be updated with more vibrant colors.

That was lovely. Beautiful photos and Carson’s descriptions of how she encourages her nephew to develop and keep his sense of wonder in nature. It read like a book that could have been put out by Mister Rogers’s Family Communications Company, reminding the reader that a child’s way of seeing things is often an important perspective.

“And because they could see it almost any night perhaps they will never see it.”
There’s an entire world of wonderful happenings waiting for you outside. Foster that sense of wonder that you had before life made you hard. Go out. Look around. Gaze in enjoyment of what it is without knowing how to name it. Listen. See. Feel. Smell. It’s waiting and it’s wonderful.

Rachel Carson, one of the science writers who kick-started North America's environmental awareness, writes this short (really short) book about introducing a young child to the wonders of the natural world on the coast of Maine. It's simple, direct, and inspirational. It brought me back to my own exploring as a child, and the joy of discovery in a pond or field. Recommended for those who need the occasional reminder that it's a big, beautiful world out there.

Penpal Book Challenge: read a book set near a beach
It's quite short, but this would be a lovely gift for new parents who want to explore the natural world with their children. Or for any adult who needs to be reminded about the magic of small things.

A terrible collection passing itself off as a textbook on SF. That's justfied by far too many essays from people looking for tenure by getting articles published. The early stories are pretty bad and there's too much poetry. I gave trying to wade through it. Read more collections, almost all would be more enjoyable.
