Pretty good overall. Although I felt at some points that things were forced into the story to make it mesh better with "Ender's Game". I'll be interested to read the next one where Bean's story won't be forced to be as closely tied to Ender's.

This book had quite a predecessor to live up to, and it not only reached my expectations but went beyond them. It was deeply psychological, had realistic politics, and gave a new twist to an already known story by showing it through the eyes of someone else, which amplified the depth of Ender's Game, showing a side of the story that was raw and dark. I personally liked Ender's Game a bit better, and I will probably always love that one a little since it was my first Science Fiction read, but Ender's Shadow comes in very close.
I will admit, though, that in some aspects what Bean does in this book does slightly make Ender not seem quite as brilliant. However, one also has to look at the point that these two kids come from VERY different backgrounds and have very different mindsets and ways of seeing the world. Of course Bean and Ender are going to see the world differently and react differently to the situations presented to them. I find that this novel fills out different viewpoints for characters that are both extremely intelligent and are from very different worlds.
Great read.
If you are planning to read this book, I strongly recommend reading Ender's Game first. It clarifies a lot of things that are brought up in Ender's Shadow.

The reason I picked up this book is because I originally read Ender's Game a long time ago, and I was informed by a friend of mine that this bookbwas basically a retelling of the same story from a different character's point of view. Now, I thought that this book was actually going to be kind of boring. After all, I knew exactly what was going to happen. I had already read this story.

I was surprised. Pleasantly so.

As a writer myself I understand the difficulty of telling the same story twice from two points of view. Under most circumstances I find that I do not have the skill necessary to make the story sound different even though there are two different characters telling it. At least, not without changing the story itself. I believe that I have a lot to learn from Mr. Card and I have a lot to learn from this book. I will definitely be reading it again. 5 out of 5. I am 100% impressed with this book it's going to stay on my shelf forever.

Almost of not actually better than enders game, but not without reading enders game first.

Excellent book in its own right, but very intriguing when read as a pair with "Ender's Game."

Not as good as Ender's Game. But it's still good. I think both Ender's game and Ender's Shadow would be improved by being combined into one book.

1/5/22 reread
I read this on Audiobook which OSC seems to suggest at the end was a great way to take in the book and I agree. There is a lot of world building here and I really wish they had made some movies or show on this great story.

I understand so much of this book rereading it as an adult as opposed to being in middle school. A bit slow at times but good to refresh why I loved Beans story so much.

Complementing Ender's Game, this book tells of the boy who would grow to be Ender's shadow. You don't really have to read Ender's Game to get this book, but if you have, then you'll appreciate the different perspective this brings.
