Really didn't enjoy this on I'm afraid Sophie! It ticked along at a good pace but I didn't like any of the characters and felt lots of loose ends weren't addressed.
The social lives of the police were just touched on but even these could have had a bit more attention.

I would've loved to give this book four stars. On some level, it would deserve it - the prose itself is good and the pacing is satisfying. But. The characters and their motivations just do not make sense. I don't just mean the characters involved in the murders; it's as though all of the regulars in the series have lost their marbles. None of their actions really seemed understandable. It wasn't a case of A doing B for reason C; it was rather a case of A doing B so that C could happen and the story could move along.

Once again, I have mixed feelings about a book. While this one was well written and the solution to the mystery not easily guessed, I felt the characters weren't particularly likeable. Unfortunately, that included the detectives. The ending also seemed a bit unresolved, which I know is realistic, but I prefer my fiction to be wrapped up a little tidier. Overall, I liked this book, but I'm not rushing out to pick up more of the author's work.

I think I need to quit Sophie Hannah. She hooks me so hard at the beginning, but the ending just never delivers. This is a particularly egregious example. The explanations make sense and all but they're so much less interesting than the original fake explanations that it's hard to embrace the book.
