I feel quite conflicted about this book. The language is absolutely stunning and so many scenes and phrases have attached themselves firmly jn my brain. I was captured by the many subjects touched upon, war, pain, immigration, language, queerness, love, addiction, generational trauma, mental illness, physical illness, race, and class, amongst many others. It’s a raw book that doesn’t shy away from pretty much anything. But it’s a mess full of shifting narrative povs, story lines, and character beats. At times it’s beautiful line after beautiful line but not much else, then followed by this bit and that one. It’s trying a lot of things but not everything works, and still this was an unforgettable read I can’t find myself regretting to read in the slightest.

Definitely the most beautiful prose I’ve ever witnessed in my life, I underlined so many incredible sentences. At one point he describes his language like a shipwreck very fragmented with pieces coming to the shore out of order and that’s a good description of how the plot unfolds. Occasionally hard to follow but not impossible and amazing portrayal of flawed but endearing characters. So sad and emotional with tiny sparks of hope. There was a scene of animal cruelty early on in the book which really turned me off for a while but the whole book is impressively unflinching. Will definitely be reading all Ocean’s future books. It’s just gorgeous, excuse the pun!

the best thing ive read this year, truly an epic portrayal of maternal relationships, queerness, addiction, and creative culture in the modern age. This is less a novel and more an ocean. Please read this.
