Vuong is a poetic writer, with a unique style - this book is both visceral and painful, in its subject matter, but also somehow I felt detached, at times, perhaps because of the poetry. A powerful story about culture, family, and growing up - I don't know that I enjoyed it, exactly, but I am glad I read it.

I really expected to love this one but I just could not get into the writing style at all. Maybe part of it was that I listened to the audiobook rather than reading the physical copy. I can fully recognize that Vuong has a lot of talent though and I’d love to read some of his poetry someday!

One of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read, perfect winter read. The writing style was poetic and well paced and descriptive and I’ve never seen metaphors and similes used better. It explored a range of serious social issues in a really interesting epistolary format
