This had been my favorite so far, I loved Zach. I am loving getting more back story and more of the secrets and Seth, gah, I need his story! These Guardians grow on me with each new book I read.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley for an honest review.
This is such a fun action packed series. It reminds me of several other big name author’s work, yet remains fresh and innovative with its own spin on the paranormal genre. This book lives up to its predecessors and delivers one hell of a ride. Wanted to give it five stars, but there was just a couple of things holding me back, so really its a 4.5 star rating.
We learned SO much about the mysterious Seth in this book, it was great to finally get some answers. This usually doesn’t happen in a series until there are tons more books out, this is only #5! This book was Lisette and Zach’s story, saw this match coming in the last book, but was still great to watch their romance unfold. Zach was as mysterious as Seth in the other titles and in this book we find out why. His was a hard road to follow in this story, but so worth it to see his transformation. I think he has become my new favorite in this world.
We also get to peak in on past leads and see how Ami is doing. She is another character with lots of skeletons in her closet that remain to come out. I look forward to reading how her plot thread plays out. We also were introduced to many new characters in this book, which lead me to hope there are plenty more addition to this series I’ve come to adore.
Besides reminding me of other series I enjoy I also love the politics this author works into her books. A little like Star Trek she works morality into her tales and sets a good example for us on how to live our lives. Sure it can be a little heavy-handed at times, but it has become much subtler in latter books while still getting the point across. Some might find it annoying, but I find myself agreeing with the author’s political and social leanings, so it works for me.
So what was it that held me back from giving it that five-star rating. The overuse of italicized words for emphasis. Some is alright to stress a point, but this was just way too much. Some of that may be just because it is an ARC book and it just hasn’t been fixed yet, gosh I hope that the reason… Anyway. Great book, great series and I eagerly await book #6 and whom ever she pick to focus on next. My bets are on Aidan! Scored book #3.5 for review and I’m off to read it now.

“I cringe every time a battle arises. And my inner Neanderthal awakens whenever I think you’re in danger.”
“Your inner Neanderthal?”
He nodded. “I believe you met him when I ordered you to never defy me again.”
She winked. “Your inner Neanderthal gave me multiple orgasms.”
And wanted to give her more.
Night Unbound is another great addition to the Immortal Guardians series where we finally get more details on female guardian Lisette, and her love interest, the mysterious Zach.
I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again: I truly enjoy a story with a tough yet feminine heroine. And that is exactly what we get with Lisette.

Be still my beating heart... I freaking love this series so freaking much I can't stand it! This book was so good!!
I was a little nervous about this on just because Lisette and Zach were both immortals.. well Zach isn't technically an immortal but I was just afraid that there wasn't going to be that tension between them like there have been with all the other immortal couples. And then the added tension with turning them. I always loved that. But honestly this book did not need that tension at all.
Zach is obviously different and I have wanted to know more about since he warned Seth his phone was broken and who doesn't love Lisette. I loved learning more about Seth too.
And yay the baby was finally born!
Loved how everything was woven into this book. "The others" were sprinkled in. I am glad we are finally learning more about them. And I am freakin glad that Zach got away from them!! Their relationship is adorable. I love that Zach lets her be herself without going too caveman.

Ever since he saved her from a mercenary attack, Lisette has been intrigued by the mysterious Zach. Her feelings are inflated even more when she starts having dreams about the man. She knows very little about him, but one the thing that is certain is that the leader of the Immortal Guardians considers him a traitor so Lisette doesn’t dare voice her feelings to anyone, even those she’s closest to.
Zach, too, has been interested in Lisette from afar and when he finally does appear to her in the flesh, he’s been badly tortured. Lisette has no choice but to help the wounded warrior, but doing so will start her on a path there’s no turning back from. In order to keep their burgeoning relationship a secret, Lisette begins to distance herself from other members of the Guardians.
While out on normal patrols the Guardians begin to notice that the vampires seem to be getting more capable and coherent, giving the Guardians a run for their money when fighting. Further confrontations reveal these vampires might have more knowledge of their opponents than the Guardians would like. As more and more mysterious coincidences appear it seems like someone within the Immortal Guardians may be a traitor. Keeping secrets is not in Lisette’s best interest right now.
The mystery of trying to figure out who would betray the Guardians drew me into the story in Night Unbound. Just when I thought Dianne Duvall was revealing the culprit she would change directions again. It was refreshing that things didn’t get too predictable.
Also, with the myriad of characters that have been introduced throughout the first five books, Duvall does a great job of including little snippets of each character (some more than others) so readers know that certain characters’ stories don’t stop with the end of their books. The camaraderie between the Guardians and their seconds provides for some funny moments, which is something I love reading in my paranormal romance and urban fantasy.
Unfortunately what both of these things did accomplish, however, was to overshadow Lisette and Zach. Lisette is one of the few female Guardians. She’s had to watch both of her brothers find their loves while she sits idly by still aching from her disastrous marriage more than 200 years ago. Zach, what little we know, is an immortal of indeterminate age; we’ll just say he’s been around for a while. But being around for a while doesn’t mean he’s been around. He’s just as surprised as Lisette that there are feelings between them. Their relationship, once established, deserved more than being pushed aside to focus on figuring out who the supposed traitor may be. I would have liked more of a balance, or it would have been nice if their relationship had been more entwined with the hunt for the traitor (an aspect that did begin to be incorporated but was quickly derailed).
All the makings were there for a great romance in Night Unbound. All the right sentiments were expressed and feelings spoken, but when it came down to it the relationship did not feel well rounded or fleshed out enough for me. Overall, the story pulled me in, just not for the reason I think it should have.

The French siblings are done! And the new enemy is revealed (sort of).
I just have one complaint: I know it's for dramatic purpose butis it really necessary to use a C-section every time there is a birth? It's like the standard method of giving birth in paranormal romance. I'm a bit sick of it.

*Book source ~ A review copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.
Lisette D’Alençon is an Immortal Guardian. Young compared to many Guardians, she is a kickass French hottie that has been around a couple centuries killing vampires. Her twin brothers, also Guardians, have found love and she’s feeling down. She’s lonely and wonders if she even deserves love after accidentally turning her brothers into Guardians all those years ago. And then Zach comes into their lives. Mysterious, powerful, secretive and, also, apparently not on good terms with Seth, the leader of the Immortal Guardians. Seth has told her Zach is off-limits. Stay away or risk his displeasure. But Lisette can’t stay away and Zach is drawn to Lisette. Is it just lust or is it more? And is Zach the one who betrayed Seth or is it someone else?
Darkness Dawns (book 1) was one of the first books I reviewed for Kensington. I read it and was enthralled. I love this series. I mean, I really do. For realz! I have said it before and I’ll say it again and not give a fuck that I’m repeating myself, it has everything I love in a book. Humor, paranormal elements, sexy steaminess, action, multiple POVs, twisty plot, sexy steaminess (did I say that already?), a wonderful cast of characters and a great world. Plus, it’s set in my own backyard here in North Carolina. I like to pretend I’ll run into a Guardian some evening. *stares off into space, drools a little* Where was I? Oh, yeah. This one even has a bit of a mystery to solve and the possibility that one of the Immortal Guardians has turned traitor. Say it isn’t so!
The gang is back in Lisette and Zach’s romance. There are even a few new guys. I went into this book with trepidation because these two characters have had very little page time. I had no feel for them and didn’t know if I could connect. I was right to be worried because I didn’t connect as well as I have in the past with the main love story characters, but this book is plenty long enough and I came to love both of them once I got to know them. Now, I’m sitting here impatient for the next book. Who finds love next? Seth? David? Ethan? Or will it be new guy Aidan? My vote goes for Aidan even though he’s new. I need Seth to be alone a bit longer though I know that’s cruel. And I really want Chris to find someone to love. He may be human, but he deserves someone who’ll take care of him since he’s too busy taking care of the Guardians and the Network to take care of himself. Make that happen! *ahem* If that’s ok with you, Ms. Duvall. Plus, we still need to find the person responsible for creating the super vampires, discover what the hell the Others are and how Marcus and Ami’s baby is doing. Plenty of fodder for many books to come, I hope!
So many good quotes in this book that I have to add a few. The whole scene with Zach in bad shape at Lisette’s is quote worthy, but I’ll just add this one...
“Bastien nodded to Ethan, then stared down at Zach. After a few moments he looked around. “Where’s the shovel?”
Ethan coughed to cover a laugh.
“I didn’t kill him!” Lisette nearly shouted.
Bastien shifted his gaze to Ethan.
Ethan held up his hands. “Don’t look at me. I didn’t kill him.”
“He isn’t dead,” Lisette snapped. “And I’m not into rough sex!”
Bastien stared at her. “Ooookay.””
Chris to Bastien:
“”And you are supposed to be serving as guard. Seven vampires live across the hallway. What are you going to do if a couple of them have psychotic breaks and try to escape while you two are having a quickie?”
“Chase them down bare-ass naked and give the human guards an eyeful.”
“I don’t know about you,” one of the vamps said in his room, “but I’m pretty sure even total mind-fuck madness wouldn’t make me risk that guy chasing me down and tackling me while he’s naked and has a hard-on.”
“Seth glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. “Now what’s wrong. You’re scowling again.”
“I don’t know,” Zach said, puzzled. “For a moment I just felt this peculiar…I don’t know…non-murderous connection to you or something.”
“It’s called kinship, asshole.”
“Ah.”
