Beautifully written, tragic, and thought provoking. Not for anyone who needs a happy ending!

I was hoping that this would take a twist, or create a hero from an unexpected place. But it seems like it's supposed to read like a tragedy, where the desire to escape poverty and live a modern middle class lifestyle will cause all to blur lines of justice and remove themselves from accountability of the neighbor. Would be curious to know more about where the author drew inspiration from and the real life stories they are trying to echo.

It took me a couple days to get into this book but once I got sucked in I read most of it in one day. Tense is one word, the depiction of corruption and betrayal was visceral at times. Sometimes the one-time interludes really added to the narrative and other times distracted from our primary characters. This book involves graphic depictions of religiously motivated violence and murder, as well as state sanctioned violence- definitely check the content warnings.

I started out not liking this book, but I have a general rule of thumb that I'll give any book 100 pages before I decide to call it quits. I'm really glad I stuck with this book, as the plot began to pick up quickly after my 100 pages. I felt at times that there was too much focus on fully developing each of the three main characters, and that some details and interesting questions fell to the wayside as the book got closer to the end. A third-person POV/omniscient narrator would have been much better for this storyline. There is a graphic few pages in which
a rally that PT Sir is speaking at goes drastically south and a man is killed and his wife is raped. I felt that it added to the plot but by a minor, minor amount and was moreso put in the book as a bit of a shock moment. I had to put the book down for a while at that point, as it was 8AM on my morning commute and I couldn't stomach reading a rape scene that early.
Like others have said, the ending felt a bit rushed. It almost felt like the author was leaving the plot open to a sequel, and I wish she had taken another 50-100 pages to fully flesh out the story, especially PT Sir's.

This book confronted socio-political injustices that are unfortunately a world wide problem. Tense, and thought provoking. Content warnings for transphobia, police brutality, judicial murder, and mentions of rape.

It takes a minute to get started and towards the middle kind of looses momentum but when it picks up again it had me on my toes. The story of Jivan and PT Sir is so intense, and heart barking. This is the first book that I have read that literally had me in tears.
