Dark and human and funny and tragic.

Recommend as an audiobook as the voice actor for Lovely is fantastic.

For some chapters I listened to an audiobook and it helped a lot to get through this book. That being said, I liked the story as it is very true to most of developing countries – the state that finds enemies in the poorest and least protected, corruption, non-existent legal system, surviving by sacrificing the ones you believe to be decent people. This book is important not only as a literary work, but also as still a rare example of a non-American/European voice

Cleverly written story that weaves together three lives: a muslim girl accused of terrorism, her teacher, and the girl she is tutoring. A devastating read.

A Burning, set in Kolkata, India, is written from the perspective of three individuals struggling to find a better life in a society that looks down upon them. Through these POVs, the author explores themes like freedom, justice, and power.

Although the plot moves quickly, I had trouble getting invested in the storyline, as I never really felt connected to any of the characters. I also found the numerous POVs distracting--beyond the three main POVs, the author would jump into a random POV every dozen chapters. I found this jarring, and did not feel that it added value to the storyline. Lastly, while I liked the ending, I thought it could have been executed better.
