It's a wonderful thing going through second hand stores and flea market for cheap books because you never know what to find. I've never heard about this author or book even though it's a classic and would probably not have know about it soon so it was a great find. A very readable and intriguing read. I'm excited that I got another book by Hasse Kemal in My possession.they might be batters and smelling of old basement but the content is what matters in the end.

This is an epic story, set in Turkey in the early years of the Republic, that elevates the struggle of an entire class of people.

The book begins when Memed runs away from his team of oxen and the drudgery of plowing the thistle-strewn soil of southern Turkey. He is dragged back to work by the landowner, Abdi Agha, who keeps the residents of five villages under his thumb. As Memed grows, so grows his defiance of the village master.

The conflict comes to a head when Abdi Agha chooses Memed's sweetheart, Hatche, to be the bride of his cousin. Memed will not allow it, and the lovers' flight leads to tragedy, from which Memed may never return.

Even as a brigand in the mountains, Memed holds to his ideals. He becomes a folk hero, and he introduces ideas that could transform the village. Yet still the landlord lurks, along with the policement deputized to rid the mountains of brigands.

Kemal writes with a love of the land and a desire for justice. His writing reminds me of the American, John Steinbeck (Memed's flight with Hatche reminded me of the chase in The Pearl). The people are elevated, those who prey upon them are taken down.

And the love story of Memed and Hatche is truly touching. This is an epic story that captures a people in vivid, wonderful ways. I highly recommend it.
