Is this a love triangle? I need to brace my heart for pain.. Cause I'm afraid I'm on the wrong side. But he's a prince
This is a good read alike for Red Queen, which isn't surprising given the covers. It is a little more harsh than Red Queen, the heroine has been broken over the course of a brutal 10 years. Her people aren't in any better circumstance. I could do with a little less of the love triangle, but really this was almost a love square (ugh). I really like the presence of Cress and I think that I will enjoy seeing how their relationship changes and what it will bring in the future. I like that the magic of this story is set more in the background, like you can feel it bubbling up to be important in the future, but it hasn't come to the forefront of the story yet. I also really like the kind of mythology/religion behind the magic of this world. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Ash Princess is possibly the definition of fantasy. There is magic, conflict, and romance; and in that way it is wonderful. The plot is fantastic, as well as the writing, and I will forever appreciate the chapter titles. That being said, for me it took a little while to get into. I enjoyed the story, though I think some may not, and I look forward to reading Lady Smoke.

**Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this title!**
When Theodosia was six, her country was invaded, and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. Her life was spared, and she was crowned Ash Princess--a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner. Ten years later, Theo has survived the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court by burying the girl she used to be and putting on the mantle of Thora, submissive and docile girl.
Finally, Theo is pushed too far when she is forced to commit an act that she can't forgive herself for. She snaps back from her submissive personality to her old, fiery self, and is determined to be the queen her people deserves.
Kat's Notes: This was a good story; there's nothing wrong with Theo's tale. My frustration with it is, it's very familiar. This hasn't even been published yet, and it feels like I've already read it.

Nothing like a solid little fantasy-take-back-my-occupied-country story. However, the plot was pretty straightforward. I thought it dealt with the concept of dealing with genocide ok, it definitely touched on some high level points and left you to think about the rest.
Not about that love triangle tho.

I've been expecting a lot for this book and I'm so glad I love it so much.
Theo was six years old when she has to faced her mom slaughtered and everything taken away from her. She's now sixteen, ten years living as the Ash Princess. Theo had to hide her real and using 'Thora' instead while living as a doll. The Kaiser had everything planned for her.
One day she finds a hope that might saved her. Slowly she made her move. She makes plan, and even though that sounds so frail but she's so sure about it. She wants to make sure that all Kalovaxian should to be killed to pay her revenge.
There's some part where made me think if part of her plan is really necessary but then she's just a sixteen years old who even tho grows with lots of pain and revenge, she's still not stable much especially to make a great strategy.
Honestly I start to liking Cress but well... I just hoping anything good for everyone on the second book.

I honestly didn’t have high hopes for this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s probably closer to 3-3.5 stars, but idk. Something about this book pulled me in.
