Me realizing I had slowly fallen for Heron, and now he's (almost) become my comfort character, and he can die in any minute:

Hello, 2022! Hello, Goodreads, hello books. This year will be great, I just finished my first book of the year, I am satisfied and happy and....
It's April.

I hate reading slumps.
About the book, though…
[b:Ash Princess|32505753|Ash Princess (Ash Princess Trilogy, #1)|Laura Sebastian|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1503181967l/32505753._SY75_.jpg|53100842] is the first book in a trilogy who, in popular opinion, resembles Sabaa Tahir's "An Ember in the Ashes" trilogy and I couldn't be happier about it since I LOVED An Ember in The Ashes.
Upon reading, though, it reminded me more of "The Winner Trilogy" by Marie Rutkoski.
And of any other YA trilogy to be honest...
We've got:
✅ The evil emperor
✅ The love triangle between a prince and a commoner
✅ The smart main character who is oppressed by the system
✅ Magic, politics and a castle setting
And honestly, what more could you want? This book, in its specific YA style, reminded me why I love YA and Fantasy. It's not always about complicated magic systems and even more complicated writing that is supposed to make the reader think that the author is very smart.
Sometimes all I want in a book is friendship, betrayal, boat rides and laughs and comfort and characters who I remain attached to.
This is great for when you just want that.
And, surprising, has been more fun than many big brain books I've read.
SCENARIOS
I've honestly got so many and some of them are genuinely ridiculous and all over the place, so either bear with me or say goodbye here. Spoilers ahead.
At first, what I thought was going to happen was.... Crescentia is going to give up Soren and see Blaise, and she would have been like "Hello, Hello, my my my, what have we here?" Because I haven't learned my lesson from Sabaa Tahir and genuinely believe yet in happy endings.
Side note: The book got me thinking so much about the "Princess and the Frog" movie, with Charlotte as Crescentia and Tiana as Theodosia.
Still at the first part, I had this whole scenario where Theo is going to kill the Kaiser and Soren. She is going to have them be tied up in the throne room and there will be her people - astreans - on either side of the room and the doors will open, and she will have a fire crown on her head instead of her ash crown. She will walk to Soren first, but she won't kill him. Talk to him. Then kill the Kaiser. Free Soren. Run away with Soren.
Either that or Soren would have struggled like a fish so hard he would have escaped and run.
Of course, it didn't end like that.
I'm not mad about the ending though, since Soren is still on the boat with them.
But then I read the part where Theodosia says she wants to burn the Kaiser, and I KNOW she's going to use her powers for that. Now I wonder if she's going to do it when Blaise is alive or dead. Cause if he's alive it's going to be like a sweet moment where she's going to cry because she won't be able to see Ampelio and her mother again and Blaise is going to reassure her that it isn't true, that she will see them again, that the gods aren't that cruel. But if Blaise is dead...the doubt and angst will just be....astronomical.
The whole idea of Blaise slowly going insane gives me so many scenarios. What if they are going to have to chain him up and Theo is going to see him like that and have to kill him? Like just...it's gonna break my heart, but the angst...
Ahhh, I am so starting Lady Smoke tomorrow...
Happy Reading, Everyone!

I'm giving the book 3.5 stars. A princess watches her queen get executed before her eyes and becomes a slave in her own kingdom. Will she become what her people expect her to be.
I don't normally get into stories about teenagers anymore, but I love good fantasy.
So suspenseful, twists & turns- everything a story needs to keep me hooked! I love the characters and their depth. They each have their own distinguishable personalities.
It's more descriptively violent than I expected, especially one chapter.
I don't think there's anything I didn't like about this book, so onto the sequel!
