Das Buch stand unglaublich lange auf meiner Wunschliste, vor allem weil ich das Cover so sehr liebe. Da ich seit einiger Zeit wieder vermehrt Fantasy lese, ist es nun endlich von der Wunschliste auf den SuB gerutscht und wurde dann auch schnell von mir gelesen.
Theodosias Leben gleicht dem einer Gefangenen im Goldkäfig. Nachdem ihre Mutter, die Königin, vom Kaiser getötet und ihr Land von ihm eingenommen wurde, lebt sie als "Ash Princess". Der Kaiser nutzt sie nur als hübsche Trophäe und zwingt sie zu schrecklichen Taten. Bis es genug ist und Theodosia aus ihrer Ohnmacht erwacht und einen Plan schmiedet, den Thron wieder zu ihrem eigenen zu machen ...
Theodosia hat mir sehr gefallen. Sie war noch ein Kind, als der Kaiser ihre Familie getötet hat und aus ihr die Ash Princess gemacht hat, weswegen sie kaum ein anderes Leben kennt. Sie weiß, was sie tun muss, um das Gemüt des Kaisers zu sänftigen und versucht mittlerweile nur noch, irgendwie zu überleben. Immer wieder ruft sie sich die Erinnerung zurück, dass sie eigentlich die Prinzessin des Landes wäre, aber sie ist zu vorsichtig um eine Rebellion zu starten. Mir hat ihre Entwicklung ganz gut gefallen, auch wenn ich gerne noch eine größere persönliche Bindung zu ihr aufgebaut hätte.
Ansonsten fand ich die Nebencharaktere teilweise auch sehr interessant, manche mehr, manche weniger, aber insgesamt hat mir die Konstellation sehr gefallen.
Der Schreibstil war sehr angenehm zu lesen, sodass ich das Buch relativ schnell beendet habe. Auch das Worldbuilding war sehr verständlich und einfach erklärt, sodass ich keine Probleme damit hatte. Besonders bei englischen Fantasy-Romane gerate ich nämlich doch häufiger ins Straucheln, wenn es ums Worldbuilding geht, hier war aber alles gut!

Der Start in die Geschichte ist mir sehr leicht gefallen und ich konnte es auch ganz entspannt lesen, aber mir fehlte lange Zeit etwas. Es war die ganze Zeit über einfach nur "gut", aber nicht besonders packend, spannend oder mitreißend, was ich ein wenig schade fand. Später kommen zum Glück noch spannendere Szenen hin zu und dann wurde ich auch ein wenig mehr mitgerissen, aber irgendwie hatte ich im Vorfeld heftigere, krassere Momente erwartet. So war es wie gesagt einfach gut, aber leider auch nicht mehr.

Ein interessanter Auftakt, der mich etwas unentschlossen zurückgelassen hat. Ich mochte die Idee sehr und auch die Charaktere haben mir eigentlich gut gefallen, aber irgendwas hat mir gefehlt. Ich habe es die ganze Zeit über wirklich gerne gelesen und bin auch schnell durchgekommen, aber mir fehlte ein bisschen mehr Spannung. Ich hoffe, im nächsten Teil wird das ein wenig mehr.

Vielversprechender Anfang, es nahm jedoch eine Wendung, als die beiden (wahrscheinlichen?) Hauptfoguren sich viel zu schnell in einen anderen verliebten, aber vielleicht liegt das daran, dass sie so jung sind.
Ansonsten war das meiste gut, ich fand nur die Pläne, die sie geschmiedet haben, meist ein bisschen zu flach und die meisten Handlungen liefen mir zu glatt. Ich mochte aber den "Twist" am Ende, auch wenn ich nicht finde das die Figuren dabei richtig/gut gehandelt haben (aber das ist wohl Geschmackssache).
Das Ende hat viel Potential für zukünftige Bücher hinterlassen, also werde ich wahrscheinlich zu dieser Reihe zurückkehren.

Honestly, I am a little disappointed with this book. I give it three stars because at least it kept me interested the whole time reading it. However, I think the main character Thora, Theo, Theodosia, whatever you want to call her, was an annoying perspective to read from. I thoroughly enjoyed the other characters but for some reason I found Theo sooooo irritating. She was dragging her feet through the whole damn book. And the two things she's tasked with- she doesn't even go through with. She has Elpis poison Cress and the Theyn- which horribly backfires ( poor Elpis )- and then she can't even go through with killing Soren- even though he is willing to let her do it. He had accepted his fate and she doesn't do it. She leaves it to Blaise to go through with it (even though that doesn't happen because she gets captured). I loved the scene with her holding the dagger to Soren though. I think Soren is so sweet and deserves better. Even Cress has a better character development. She goes from a simple girl who is pretty and whatnot, to a woman vowing for revenge. I dig it.
I'm hating on Theo hard but she wasn't a completely awful character. I liked that her character endured so many beatings/whippings and even killing her father so she could survive and help her people.
All in all I give it a 3/5. Some parts of the book had me questioning why I was even reading it. But overall I enjoyed the book and will read the next book in the series. I hope it can redeem Theo in my eyes.

Overall the pacing is fast enough where the plot keeps moving but slow enough to give us time with the main character, Theo.
This book was great! I loved the characters and the plot. It was fast paced throughout most of it but there were a couple spots that felt a little slow. Those were easy to get past and go right back into the action.
Overall I enjoyed this book and can't wait to start the next one!

3.5 stars! Rounded up because the narration was good and it was hard to put down
Quite an enjoyable start to a series. It doesn't bring a ton new or unique to the genre of princess needing to retake her kingdom but what it uses is done well.
I liked the idea of a magic system in which the power comes from gems in a mine. Those who have been chosen by the gods have loads of power from these gems anybody else only gets a fraction.
I also appreciated that the abuse and cruelty Thora was exposed to wasn't glossed over. We got to see her getting whipped, she watched her mother die in front of her as well as many other painful instances. Thora learnt what she had to do to survive. To be meek and endure her punishments. It takes a horrific punishment to make her realize that this isn't truly living and then the meeting of her people to push her to act, for her to stop being Thora and return to being Theodosia.
The inevitable love triangle of YA princess books is present and not ideal for me. I wish that drama was of a different sort rather than the same old trope. But it wasn't too bad in this one.
There's an interesting relationship between Thora and Cress. While there are some different depths to this friendship, I was left curious as to why it was even allowed in the first place.
The biggest knock I have on this book is the world building or the lack of it. I need more of how this world works. Yes there are these gods/goddesses that have powers and bestow them on others but there wasn't enough of this explained or shown in this story.
There was enough here that I will happily continue with the series at some point.

First of all, before I write my actual review I would just like to say that I am really proud of myself because even though it took me a month to read this book, I read it every single day. Even when I could only read for ten minutes or half a chapter.
So in the beginning I wasn’t too impressed by Ash Princess. The current setting of this story is a kingdom where Astreans live under the tyrannical rule of the Kalovaxians because they have been conquered. Our main character, Theodosia is the destined, rightful queen who must take back her kingdom. Yeah, I think I’ve read this in YA before…
Even for the characters in the beginning, I was still doubtful. Mostly because I just didn’t see any motivation behind the actions taken. You’re told beforehand everything that happens and just have to absorb the information of this world. So the Kaiser, who is evil, managed to take down a whole country (and the Astreans had powers from their gods)? If he’s so evil, then why is our main character even alive? She should be dead.
Anyway, as the story goes on, the plot does seem generic. But around a third of the way in, all of the characters suddenly just hit hard. This book did a pretty good job of showing the complex emotions and relationships that exist in Theo’s life. Her struggles and motivations make sense. I can actually remember the names of the side characters because they’re written like characters and not cardboard cutouts. Up to the point where my most hated trope, the love triangle, comes in and I can kinda-sorta understand the struggle (sadly).
Surprisingly this book is being compared to Red Queen. Maybe the world and setting give it that feeling. But Theo and Mare are extremely different. I already knew I was going to continue this series before I finished the book. So if you’re someone who enjoys these types of novels, go in for it. Although I will add that Theo does go through repeated physical torture, also war crimes are mentioned in this book which YA doesn’t always do. So if you’re planning on reading this just keep that in mind.
