DID NOT FINISH: 8%

A main character with no back bone and no pride from page one? I could not even get 10% in because I could not root for the FMC. As flat, boring, and abused as a doormat.. which was what she is.

⭐4,5
It was good but didn't hit like a 5⭐ nor a 4⭐ :D
Definitely excited to continue

I really loved the book and the action got me hooked
I’m not gonna lie...there were some parts where my eyes got teary because everything was so...UGH MY HEART
I also really really liked the way the characters and the world was built! I have nothing to complain about this one
The only reason i gave it 4 stars is that i felt soren’s and thora’s feelings/relationship kinda rushed...Same goes with blaise but here in a smaller measure...
But anyway I can’t wait to read what’s gonna happen next so right now i’m off to book two!
ALSO THE LAST SCENE GOT ME SO SHOOKED
WHO WOULD HAVE EXPECTED THIS

I’m dnf-ing this one for a while... All I could think about while reading the first chapters was: can we stop the MC from rambling pretty please.
I’m not sure I’ll pick it up later.

Loveable characters: Complicated

i tried reading this book months ago but could never get into it until i finally picked it back up and sat down. it starts slow at first and starts to build over time, it took me a lot longer than i expected to finish it but that’s just because there’s so much detail that you can’t really rush through pages like any typical book.
i would definitely recommend to fantasy fans and any readers who want to make an escape to a different world.
i loved the character of Theodosia and Heron. Theodosia is the main character throughout this book fighting to claim back the kingdom her mother ruled before she was killed. Theo was being held captive, kept like a medal of warning to her people to stay behaved and submissive. Heron was one of her protectors that comes later on in the book and is sort of a comedic and loving relief that was needed throughout the book to help cut through the loss and destruction.

This book is one for three in the trilogy and i can’t wait to pick up the second.

It took me FOREVER to read this. Forever. I can't exactly explain why that was. There is nothing inherently wrong with this story. The characters are good. The story is good. The world building is good. It just didn't quite grab me in a way that caused me to ever really care whether I was reading it or not. I got through it simply through my own perseverance. That was it. My neurotic need to finish the books I start was really the only reason I finished this story.

Here's the issue ... There is nothing new in this book. I feel like I have read this story a thousand times before. A young girl is the last great hope for her oppressed and conquered people. The adults are either dead or impotent when it comes to offering any sort of assistance in getting out of this worldly hell. A small group of ragtag youth are smarter and braver than the entire population of oppressed people. They are going to get their country back. But that's not all ... there is a young, cutey patootie royal of the oppresser nation who isn't as evil as his father. Can we trust him to do the right thing? There is a Romeo and Juliet "love" element, and in this story there is even a freaking love triangle. A love triangle!!! Surely we have moved past the glory days of love triangles in YA books, haven't we? Yeah, this story seemed like a rehashing of all of the popular YA dystopian/fantasy books of the past decade. And that made it hard to keep reading at times.

But ...

I did end up enjoying the story. I do want to continue in this series. I'm not sure that I can bring myself to pay $11 for the sequels, though. I'll look for them in the library. But I do want to see how Theo and her people find a way to overthrow the awful ruler who has overtaken their country. My absolute favorite character in this story was Soren. His dilemma in being a good man who is loyal to his country and his people ... but finds himself twisted in all directions when he realizes that he cannot support his horrible father ... is fascinating. I want to know more about him. I want for Theo to trust him. I want for him to bring peace to this country. He has lots of potential as a character.

And then there is Theo's bizarre relationship with Crescentia. What a strange "friendship"! It makes no sense that these two would be close at all. Cress almost kept Theo as a sort of pet, but there was affection in their relationship that kept Theo from wanting to hurt her childhood friend, even when she deserved it. But things change DRASTICALLY at the end of the story. Cress is no longer going to be a spoiled, self-centered future princess. She's got a much darker future in store for her. It'll be interesting to see how this goes.

I can't say that this book was the best book ever, but there is enough potential in the story that I'll stick with the series to see what happens next. I ended up enjoying this book despite the month that it took me to finish it. I'll give it three stars. I liked it.

Overall a very good, page turning story. The world and characters are well written & believable.

I loved this book! Theo, the main character, is expected to act a certain way around everybody - submissive Thora at court, strong queen with her people. She has complicated and contradicting emotions and it leads to tough decisions while everybody judges her based on who they want her to be. I'm excited to continue the series to discover if she ever gets a chance to create the person she wants to be instead of always wearing masks to play parts for others.
