This book is a blast. It's written in poetic form, but as narrated by a tween boy. It's hysterical & I think it's impossible to not love Hertz.

I especially love that Hertz sacrifices something dear to him to make right on a mistake that cost his friends money. I also love that he learns that life outside of tech is totally worthwhile!

12 year old Hertz Zindler has gone viral but not for anything noteworthy but instead for literally almost burning his house down and traumatizing his mom’s guide  dog Ava. His mom decides that he  needs to unplug from his technology obsessed life for the summer and instead spend some time with his great uncle Pops in Arizona. What follows is a fun filled summer of making new friends, and  competing in a scavenger hunt for a chance to try to win some cash to connect back to the real world.

At first Hertz feels completely out of place in  Show Low, Arizona. Great Uncle Pops loves all things America and that is evident when he pulls up in his massive Cadillac, Anastasia, which is painted in a glory of patriotic pride. At Pop’s trailer there is no pesky technology to be had for a bored 12 year old. Pop instead teaches Hertz how to do things with his hands besides hold video game controllers. He teaches him about valves and how to change out a thermostat without a NASCAR pit crew. Hertz makes new friends who join him in a scavenger hunt to claim prize money to help buy old technology he can use to plug back into the world he left behind. Fey is a sweet girl with little quarks that Hertz admires. Allen is a friend that sticks up for what is right and is loyal. In the end Hertz learns the value of connecting to the people around him and in doing so also helps find the true identity of the fire starter endangering the town. Making the news again for something amazing.

This book is written in verse and at first I was hesitant because I tend to stay away from most poetry. Each chapter is a short poem that progresses the story. It was hilarious and an overall fun and captivating read

I was instantly intrigued that Suzanne Purvis chose to write her middle-grade book in verse about a tech-obsessed tween who accidentally sets his room on fire and finds himself sentenced to live in nowhere Arizona with his eccentric great-uncle, who doesn't even have a TV.

For Hertz, this is a fate worse than death, and he finds himself on a mission to get anything, a phone, a tablet, a laptop, anything that will get him back online. He believes that his salvation comes in the form of a scavenger hunt being run by the local Chamber of Commerce, with the winner winning a cash prize; little does he realize that his mission will lead him to make friends and realize that there is more to life than a screen.

As a parent raising similar-aged and screen-obsessed kids, I found this heart-warming and beyond relatable.

Hertz Gets Fused, written by Suzanne Purvis, will be published by Owl's Nest Publishers and will release on May 15, 2023.

I received an arc of this book from the publisher; all opinions are my own.

I received Hertz Gets Fused from @owlsnestpublishers as an ARC. I knew right away I wanted to add this to my #middlegrademarch line up.

After accidentally torching his room, twelve-year-old tech-obsessed Hertz Zindler is sentenced to a summer in nowhere Arizona with no technology, no friends, and no way off the local sheriff’s suspect list for a recent string of arsons.

HERTZ GETS FUSED is a quick and quirky contemporary read about a boy and his dog and learning new relationships during all the unexpected adventures of life.

This was a fast read. I started it beofre bed to get the flavor of the book. Next thing I knew I was 100 pages in.

It was written in verse. I have to admit I’m FASCINATED by novels written in verse. They are so fun to read and this one was no exception. This was a truly enjoyable book about a boy being reintroduced to the world outside of screens.

I definitely recommend this one. My kids won’t read books I recommend but I’m going to leave this one lying about so they will “discover “ it for themselves. 😉
