dnf. i just could not put myself through this, and its kinda sad because I kinda wanted to like it since I used to but no. just no
this book just takes everything the first book worked for (not much) and killed it. the lgbtish relationship? NO we just couldn't be happy with that, there has to be some boy involved
this book just shows the weirdest sexism reversed, homophobic, tasteless book. so the main characters have no character anymore. sophies character is dead, shes just quiet and agatha is TERRIBLE. now her entire world is tedros. Tedros has no character, its terrible.
also the quote "whats a boy? someone who wishes for a girl. whats a girl? someone who wishes for a boy. whats someone who kissed a girl? DEFINITELY A BOY" homophobia if I've ever seen it.
anyway ill shut up about how much I hate this now like IT IS THAT BAD

Loved this. Was super entertaining. However, when I have kids they are not allowed to read this series before they develop critical thinking skills and they will read it with me because the gender stereotyping and heteronormativity in this book is, well, a lot.
Docking points for being a tad problematic and because it’s not completely perfect, though I found Soman’s writing improved from the first book. Also wtf happened to Agatha. She changed so much from the first book…
I hear this is commonly thought of as the worst book in the series so I’m excited to see where the story goes from here.

While there are still things I enjoy about this one, it is my least favorite of the series. That is mostly because literally every problem could be solved if Sophie, Agatha, and Tedros sat down and talked for literally two minutes. While the plot is just as interesting as the previous book, there's an overload of miscommunication, deception, and just outright ignoring what people are saying. However, I do think it's important that this book remains in the series. In the first book, Agatha believes Sophie no longer needs her. In this one, it's Sophie's turn to fear that Agatha will leave her behind. The role reversal is critical to their characters, especially in seeing how they react differently to the same situation.

This is one of the books in which the coven, Sophie's roommates and proper witches, Hester, Anadil, and Dot, really shine. Compared to the melodrama that is the main three's relationship, their snide remarks and outside clarity are sorely needed. Also, this book deals with a lot of questions about gender and sexuality that are very intriguing but not explored to their full potential. That may have to do with the fact that this book was released in 2014 when gay marriage was just barely legal, so maybe neither the author nor the audience were ready for that quite yet.

this is by far the worst book i've read and i am not exaggerating. i've read harry potter and the cursed child, i've found joy in books that most people hate such as the maze runner series, but i cannot excuse this blatant misogyny. this entire book is a thinly veiled straw man argument against feminism. the definition of a straw man from merriam webster is a weak or imaginary opposition (such as an argument or adversary) set up only to be easily confuted which is exactly what happens ever since chapter 5. there are several parts where there are valid feminist ideals that make sense but it's linked in universe with wanting men to be slaves and homeless. and its all because sulky boy tedros said women don't need men to love and don't need men in fairytales at all (i'm literally not joking this happens in the book). i finished chapter 6 and i said out loud "i can't do this anymore" before deciding to DNF it. there are so many notes i made that i'll add on later because right now i'm so angry that this even has a 3.65 average rating. one of the worst parts is that if i were even one year younger i would probably give this a higher rating, or even stuck it out through the entire thing, but because i know what a straw man is i'm lucky enough to see right through the BS. 0 stars.
