Really had me at first, thought it would become one of my favourites, but
the author had to magically cure the boy by giving him a crush and a friend.
2 stars for the childhood part of it, though.

Also, the girl was so unnecessary, Gon was right there already, they had chemistry, Gon had some personality behind his name unlike the girl 🤷🏻‍♀️

A friend made me read this book, and my thoughts are:

1. Why does everything fall into the plot so conveniently in this book? Like where did the baker, who apparently has been living above their house this whole time, come from? And why is he suddenly paying this kid's rent? And how did the protagonist just happen upon a rich old man willing to pay for his mother's hospital bills (plus a room upgrade, of course.)

2. The romance was meh.

3. Okay, so everything just miraculously ties together so perfectly at the end... Like a literal boom boom, big bang event and things work out terrifically for our main characters.

4. Stop it. Don't tell me love conquers all, even a rare brain condition...

5. Why are you blaming a working mother for being ambitious and making it a point by blaming her busy work schedule for the disappearance of her child??? That's just... Please stop it. Nope.

There are some things I liked about this book (maybe). There is one. I like the friendship between the two boys. That's it.
Also, I can see how (maybe) if I were 16 and read this book, I would think it to be very influential.

Oh yeah, and I liked the cover too. That's it. I'm sorry.

It was a good read but the ending felt too short. Maybe it's me because thats something I feel with a lot of books. Either ways it was a unique perspective to read from.

Well well well. When I’d seen that RM had read and recommended this book, I knew I had to read it ✨ I found a copy in Busan and picked it up right away!

I was not expecting the level of sadness and violence that came through in this; I will include the content warnings below.

Yunjae was so lovable from the start; lost, yes, but certainly not the nasty names everyone else called him.
I also began to develop such a soft spot for Gon too, because he was seriously struggling! 🥲
I cried towards the end of the book. There were angry tears, happy tears and sad tears too 🫠
I also ADORED Dora and Yunjae’s mum, they were such positive figures for me ❤️

4.5 out of 5 stars for me ✨ Thank you!

Easy to read and well paced and well written.
I teared up twice but not at the moments you think.
Its a great character study and bit of psychology in a non-academic way.
 I didnt have any complaints

Yet another banger. I wish I had known earlier that there are so many great Korean authors, and I hope others won't make the same mistake as me and wait so long to explore Korean literature. I can easily see this becoming a modern classic, and it will be completely justified. Almond is a flawless exploration of disability in society, and a character study of a boy unable to feel emotions. This book had me gasping, tearing up and giggling.. highly recommend.
