I read this one for a bookclub (even tho this is one of the books for April) but I am messy, ok? I really enjoyed it up to the Dora point, I am sorry but those boys were in love, maybe it was the translation but this had Boris and Theo vibes all over it and I will not take this heater nonsense, regardless it was such and amazing take on feeling and damn did I feel something was similar to autism with our mc but also I did not feel like it was exactly autism. I really enjoyed Gon as a characters, such a complex and interesting boy and also this book feels like the perfecto book to recommend to people who like to compare trauma like did Gon suffer a lot and deserves much better? yes but also Yunjae went through a lot of stuff and so we shouldn't be comparing what they went through or trying to make their traumas compete, that's not what life's about bc we all go through shit ok? I said through so many times my brain is melting.

Merry Christmas (or Merry Happy) to everyone reading this today btw
'kay, I'm out
Bye

This book was unlike any story I’ve read in a long time. Was very good and page turning. I loved the friendship in this book!

A friend recommended this book to me a few weeks ago, telling me that she was certain I was going to enjoy it. And she was right! I just could not put it down! I felt like I was diving into the mind of our main character, like a silent companion to his growth as a person. The story felt so alive and human, as if the characters were in front of me and I was just a spectator watching everything unfold.

I am so glad I finally decided to get my hands on this book and read it. It is probably one of my favourite reads of 2022!

The brilliance of this novel is how, despite the story being told through the lens of someone incapable of experiencing typical emotions, the overall effect is a highly emotional one. It’s unsettling and upsetting, yet strangely uplifting. Yunjae’s inner monologue is oddly charming as he tries to make sense of the world and of human nature without a frame of reference most people take for granted. What is “good” or “evil” without the fear most of us are born with, or without the moral compass our society instills into us? What is love, exactly, without the fear of losing the ones who are dearest to us?

I enjoyed the short “chapters” of this book, which made it quick to read through and enhanced the fragmented, almost stream-of-consciousness style of the narrative. Part of me felt like resolution of the story was way too convenient, and while I was expecting a slightly darker or more ambiguous ending, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t relieved that everyone got a happy ending, more or less.

Almond clocks in at under 300 pages, making it easy to breeze through in a day or two. This was such a unique little story, and I’m so glad I picked it up.

Such an incredible book! I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and how engaging it was. Pulled at my heartstrings and I loved these characters and felt for what they went through from page one.
