A really moving coming-of-age story, and a great translation.

has dark themes imbedded but i still enjoyed the read. the boys made me really nervous but their bond pulled the other out of their comfort zones and that was beautiful to read.

This book was an interesting one. I thought the premise was super interesting and I can see why it is so popular. For me specifically, I really liked the psychological aspect to it. I think it did a good job of exploring the full width of how the condition the main character has would affect someone and their daily life. And I am sure a lot of neurodivergent people can probably relate to the experience of not being able to understand other people or read emotions very well, even if it isn't too this extreme length. And I liked that this book decided to explore it by making the main character adapt to a person that doesn't follow the standard behaviors. This was just a pretty fun read overall. I did feel like the ending
where the main character gets beat half to death by a random gang member we just met a bit far fetched though.

I also liked the inclusion of the used bookstore. Honestly though I think this book would have been improved by the two main characters falling in love, or at least ending with the hint of that.
Overall a decent read!
Listened to on Libby.

I LOVED Almond. Sohn explores friendship, love, and grief in such a unique way, making me ponder about what it means to simply know someone as opposed to understanding them. For Yunjae, a boy who is trying his hardest to make the people around him happy, without even really understanding what that means for himself, to give others the benefit of the doubt that he never receives, love and friendship in the most unlikely circumstances makes so much sense. I loved the characters, I loved the dialogue between them, and I loved the silly and sad situations that led them to becoming who they are and who they will be in the future. Just a wonderful book that prompts a lot of introspection into what it means to be a human and the importance of second chances.

i quite liked this. the first two-thirds or so took me much longer to read because it was difficult to be in yunjae'e head for too long but i binged the back half very quickly. i liked the exploration of alexithymia but his narration was too much at times.
while i'm happy with the way things ended, i thought it was a tad cheesy that his mom woke up. good for him though.
i found myself really feeling for gon.
i'm happy he has sensible adults around him now at least.
