Yunjae is a Korean boy diagnosed with alexithymia, a condition that makes the experiencing of emotions such as anger or fear difficult. Fortunately, Yunjae has the loving support of his mother and grandmother, until tragedy strikes and he is on his own. Shortly after, he meets a troubled teenager named Gon, and the two boys forge an unlikely bond over emotions.
I won’t lie to you, there are times where I wish I wasn’t able to feel anything at all, so negative emotions like anger and pain would be nonexistent. And I won’t deny that it would sometimes make my life easier. Despite the fact that he came off as a huge jerk, I could sympathize with Gon in that regard.
When I said it would SOMETIMES make my life easier, that’s because a lot of the time, feeling emotions is a good thing. They’re cathartic. I enjoyed this book because it made me think about things like that, and I also learned a valuable lesson in the process. It was also an easy read, and very fast-paced. I finished it in just over twenty-four hours.
The only thing I wish would have been different was that there was more to the story. Sometimes it felt a little too fast, and I also would have liked to see more dialogue, to get that balance of showing vs telling.
TW: bullying, use of knives, extreme outbursts of anger

This was such a brutal yet beautiful read. Read the translator’s notes at the end and I’m grateful that she keep the intention of the story pure and distinct - I felt it from the choice of words used, the pacing and even the length of the sentences. Haven’t came across a five star read in a while, glad that I picked this up.
