I’m so happy I found this little Alpennia prequel on Heather Rose Jones’ website this morning. Even happier it was offered as a free download.

It’s set a few years before book one Daughter of Mystery when 18 year-old Barbara is still armin to Baron Saveze. With the baron out of Rotenek for the summer and Barbara languishing after daily training and studies are done, she decides some opera might be fitting entertainment.

Jeanne, Vicomtesse de Cherdillac - distracted by her gossiping friends and barely able to focus on the delightful singer on stage - spots Barbara sitting in Saveze’s private theater box… all alone… and my... looking quite grown up.

Themes: such a nice little present to read about Barbara and Jeanne, I always wondered.
