It's a beautiful story about a man's family and how he and different members moved toward forgiveness after terrible things happened to them. The story spends a lot of time in the second world war as his family surfers under the Japanese internment in Canada.

I think the theme of forgiveness was woven in very subtly and with wisdom.

Although it wouldn't have been my first choice, Forgiveness' win during Canada Reads 2018 was justified.

Horrifying the things his grandparents endured. I knew some parts of their Canadian history but definitely learned a whole lot more after reading this book. Glad it is part of Canada reads this year - everyone would be better off having read this book.

Canada Reads 2018. 3.5 stars. Very tender account of family and history. How many of us forget this dark dark stain on Canada? How Japanese Canadians were treated during and well before WWII is appalling to say the least. Forgiveness is a good name for this book. I think it takes a huge amount of courage for the author and his family to share such personal stories.

P.S. I would have liked to know more about how the maternal and paternal grandparents relationship.

For a book that won Canada Reads, I expected a whole lot more. It was really hard to get into, in many places lacked emotion, and wasn't really about forgiveness at all?

Put it down for a little while but SOOOO glad I picked it back up. If I had to guess, this might be my #1 pick of 2018. So amazingly brilliant and beautiful.

This book was incredible and I learned and felt so much. I did find myself really wanting more about the relationship between the grandmother and grandfather in terms of forgiveness and how they navigated that. Really amazing story and grateful to have been witness to it.
