Jake the Growling Dog by Samantha Shannon is a fun book for kids that also has an important meaning to it.
Having a young child it is hard to find books that keeps them entertained and engaged all the way through but this book does a great job of holding their attention. The pictures were bright and colourful but also weren’t too “in your face”. It had my little one flicking through them and laughing at the animals.
She also really enjoyed when I read the book to her. While she is probably a bit young to understand the message she enjoyed the words and how they rhymed.
My only issue was that some of the rhymes felt a bit forced to me, which is probably only so noticeable because I was reading it out loud, and the book felt like it was a couple of pages too long for kids this age. However it was fun, it as enjoyable and my daughter definitely loved it. For that reason alone I would highly recommend this book.

This is such a sweet book, it teaches that no matter if your different from everyone else, that is okay. Being unique is beautiful. I also like at the end the list of people or authority figures that you can teach your children to be thankful for.

This is a really cute children’s book. This is the first book in a series about Jake the lovable dog who growls all the time. The growling can make others feel like Jake is mad or sad, but that’s not the case. Jake is a very happy dog who just happens to growl. The author includes in the book activities for kids to reinforce the lesson from the book. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to parents for your kids.
Thank you, NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for providing me with this beautiful children's book. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is great. It teaches children to be kind but I think adults also need to learn about this thing since Jake's uniqueness is very often misunderstood. We need to be more caring and kind to not judge people by their outlook or the way they act and talk. I love this book so much! A great start to my day.

I loved everything about this children’s book! This author did an amazing job of conveying an important message in a way that children can actually understand.
Jake is a very misunderstood dog, he’s nothing like he appears and thankfully one of his friends is able to see through his scary growl and recognize him for who he is. Everyone is unique in their very own way and we need to be thankful for our differences and be open to change.
I was able to read this book with my 3-year-old and even he was able to understand that Jake is a good dog and his growl is his only way of communicating, well done Samantha! I will definitely be reading this to him again and again!

We have fallen in love with this delightful children's book centered around Jake, an endearing dog whose constant growls, meant to express happiness and excitement, inadvertently create a barrier between him and the other animals. Mistakenly perceived as always angry, Jake plays alone until a chance encounter with a sympathetic squirrel, Neet changes everything.
In the quest to help Jake make friends, Neet introduces him to the various animals, unveiling the true nature of his joyful growls. The story reaches its heartwarming peak when Jake, overwhelmed by the joy of newfound friendships, lets out his biggest and loudest growl, expecting the worst. To his surprise, his friends not only stay but join in the laughter.
What sets this book apart is its incorporation of guided activities that promote kindness and gratitude, making it a valuable resource for parents looking to instill important values in their children. The use of verse adds an extra layer of enjoyment, making it a perfect choice for read-aloud sessions.
In our household, the book has become a favorite, especially for our 5-year-old non-verbal autistic son, who affectionately refers to it as the "grrr" book. Its profound impact extends beyond enjoyment; it has served as a valuable tool in explaining to our other children that differences, like those exhibited by their brother, don't diminish love and connection. Understanding requires effort, just as Jake's friends learned to appreciate his unique way of expressing happiness.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any parent navigating the challenges of a child who may not fit in conventionally. It beautifully encourages tolerance, fosters friendship, promotes understanding, and emphasizes the importance of gratitude and kindness. The powerful message of acceptance resonates profoundly, making it an invaluable addition to any children's bookshelf.

Jake the Growling Dog: A Children's Book about the Power of Kindness, Celebrating Diversity, and Friendship (Jake the Growling Dog Book 1) by Samantha Shannon - Review by Janel Bernotas
A sweet story about Jake, a happy-go-lucky dog who happens to growl all the time. He’s not mad or aggressive. It’s just how he is. This first book in the “Jake the Growling Dog” series teaches kindness, love, and understanding. It includes some thoughtful kindness sharing exercises at the end to help children spread love and care toward others. This has become one of my favorite childrens book series!

I love a children's book with rhymes!
This first book in thr Jake series is just a cute introduction to the adorable dog, who growls with everything he does. I love the authors use of rhyming and I love that her messages are all about being kind to yourself and to others. Each book has a message and exercises at the end that you and your child can work on together. I think that any child up to 6 and 7 would love Jake book.

This book is a great way to teach kids about inclusion, by using a cute dog they can connect to, to understand that just because something is different doesn’t mean you have to be afraid of it. It also shows kids the effects it can have on someone when you treat them differently just because they are different than you or your normal friends group. My grade school aged girls loved the animals in this book, and related to the story, as they have both felt the way that Jake feels in this book.
Jake is a misunderstood dog. He growls all the time so everyone thinks that he's angry or mean. He's not though! He's just thankful for all that he has!
This is a super cute, very short read that focuses on thankfulness. It includes some ways that readers can be thankful and show that to others. It also contains an activity to help children remain thankful.
