Actually, 2.5 stars. Any book that mentions A Sand County Almanac should get more stars, but I just don't think this book lived up to the hype.
What I loved: the depiction of the marsh and marsh life, how Kya documents it all, how Tate understands her.
But the rest is trite: the Boo Radley trial, the obvious injustices. The novel is a lost opportunity to explore how one woman can make meaning in her life. It's too "feel good" and pat. It's a book that gives the impression of realism without committing to any kind of nuanced exploration of the complexity of life and relationships. Much of the dialogue seem trite or contrived. (The exchange between Kya and her brother once he returns: very few people are that self-reflective. He talks to her like a therapist.)
I like Kya, how she perseveres, but I can't help but think that all the women who love this book and Kya, would actually be more like the townspeople. Kya's perseverance is too easy. There is no exploration or discussion of setbacks. She's a good person, living her life, so overall, she gets what she deserves.

I listened to the audio version of this book and loved the voice of Cassandra Campbell almost as much as I loved the story itself. The author captures the ugly, yet at times inevitable feelings of abandonment, isolation, and estrangement so beautifully it hurts. Kya’s story lives on in my mind as though it really happened and that is why we read.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing for quite a long time which made the tension during the read amazing. The writing style could be a little bit more mature but the story made me forget the parts that were very stereotypical or not so well written.

I would recommend this to everyone really!

I wasn’t too optimistic at the start of the book but really loved it in the middle. I really though Tate was involved with Chase’s murder as well so was a little disappointed at the end but it was still a solid ending, just had my hopes up too much.
