This was somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars, but I'll round up because the ending tied everything up in a lovely way. I think Stiefvater is one of those world-builders who does her homework and ensures internal consistency in her world's magic, and yet it was hard at times not to feel like we were just being handed new versions of reality and asked to accept them and keep going, particularly when it came to everything involving Greywaren.
Also, wasn't it implied that the only reason the bottle of ink was a sweetmetal was because of how it looked in the bottle, not the ink itself? How did they know it would stay a sweetmetal in Ronan's arm?
Did we ever get an explanation for
how Jordan stayed awake so long after the ley line shut down
? All that aside, the best elements of this series — the witty dialogue, the fast-paced plot, the stellar audiobook narration — still made this easy to devour in less than a week. I don't know that I'd be as quick to recommend this series to others as I have been to recommend the Raven Cycle books, but I'm still not sad to have gotten this additional chapter in the lives of those characters, particularly the Lynch brothers.

This is a story about growing up, grief, coming to terms with the damage you have done, and the person you want to be (and the end of the world). It's a TRIP that wavers between fantasy and magical realism, and after spending two books growing to understand characters, this installment instills empathy and redemption for them in the face of apocalyptic odds. This entire series is driven by the development of the characters OVER the plot (the plot is the weakest thread of this book, imo) but it's redeemed by the magic system, complex and unique characters, their nuanced interrelationships and development, and Steifvater's writing, which is poetry throughout.

I cried.

Start with The Raven Boys (it's YA, you'll survive though) and the rest of The Raven Cycle if you've never come across it.

Listen to the audiobooks. They're narrated by the coach from Remember the Titans and are an impeccable addition to this saga. Just a perfect match for voice and story.

end of an era

THANK GOODNESS I FINALLY FINISHED THIS SERIES

I think my problem was I could not stand most of the characters. The plot was actually somewhat interesting but ooooooo I was so annoyed.

Hennessy was SO freaking annoying. Bryde was annoying. Farooq-Lane was pretty annoying. Declan was boring and I guess his character is supposed to be but it was still boring to read his parts. The only characters I really liked were Ronan, Jordan, and DUH Adam.

However, the epilogue was pretty great.

Also, why were so many people gay?????✋
