This gave me "Where the Red Fern Grows" vibes but with less sentimentality or the whole "dogs dying at the end" episode. Berry delivers the narration in such a subdued way that I found myself sitting in that mood for moments whenever I took a break from reading.

For Berry, place and community are paramount, and it shows is his honest, small-scale stories from Port William, Kentucky. I hope his related novels are a bit more expansive.

Another of Wendell Berry's masterpieces. I've read Jayber Crow, but this one was much easier to read due to it's shorter length. Highly recommend!

Feels like a pairing with Andy Catlett, similar styles while this takes more of a coming of age approach. Such a straightforward, melodious read, something to ease the mind, while touching of life’s hardships and masculine relationships for a young boy.
