An interesting literary choice, taking the same family of Penobscot indigenous people and telling 12 stories about life in and around the reservation.  These 12 stories are almost independent tales, but they contain the same people and names, but they don't necessarily impact and follow each other.  Morgan Talty seems to be taking the short story framework and smashing it up against the novel.  It's a really cool concept that works well.  Talty explores many issues having indigenous peoples in modern America... Family, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual assault, old vs new medicine, poverty, etc.

Incredible collection by an accomplished writer. Just. Wow. The writing was so crisp, so vivid, and when I turned the last page it was like a gut punch. This writer is one to watch.
