Once again MXTX brings up an amazing, lengthy novel rich of interesting and grey characters. While there are some aspects of the story that I found quite boring and not really useful to the plot (hence the 4 stars), TGCF is definitely the more fleshed out and pondered works among those of MXTX published until now. The foreshadowing in the first and third books are delicious and book two and four are painful in the best way.

adventurous sad

I spent 40+ hours reading this incredibly long novel and still at the end I wished there was more. Episodic in nature but it all pulls together in the end as a neatly packaged set of ordeals set out by the villain not only in the present storyline but throughout the traumatic, heart-wrenching backstory of Xie Lian. Was on the edge of my seat many a time and went through a slew of emotions.

Though the thing that I, and I think everyone, enjoys so much about this novel is Xie Lian and Hua Chang's relationship. For a bit I couldn't pinpoint why I enjoyed them so much but then it hit me that this is probably the first romance I've seen where there weren't any agitating misunderstandings, angry outbursts, jealousy, or any of those tumultuous sorts of events that pit them against each other. Xie Lian and Hua Chang just fully and simply trust in each other even when no one else does and are more than happy to actually talk things out. It's a very satisfyingly easy-going relationship that warms the heart.

This novel holds a special place in my heart, standing as my ultimate favorite. The relationships between the characters, the captivating personalities they possess, the moments of elation and sorrow - all coalesce into a literary masterpiece that I can't shake off. Amidst its pages, I found my affection gravitating towards Hua Cheng; his complexities resonated with me on a personal level. As a reader, connecting with his journey and emotions added an even deeper layer of immersion. Despite being my first dive into such an extensive novel, I was engaged throughout. "Only after having met you did I rediscover that it's such a simple thing to be happy", this quote encapsulates the novel's core message — that genuine happiness often stems from the simplest but most meaningful connections in our lives.

i loved this book so much that im afraid i'll never feel this way about any other book ever again in my life. i didn't expect that a fan translation of a chinese webnovel could engulf my heart and soul like this but here we are. this is just......one of the best things i've ever read and im so !!!!!!!!

i adored reading all 2000+ pages of this novel. tgcf is amazingly one of the funniest books i have ever read, and yet it also gave me so much pain i could not stop crying. this book will make you laugh out loud, but it will also make you sob like a baby. (i am the baby)

im so attached to this story because i am very much in love with almost every character here (tgcf had me loving sentient weapons and a piece of silk i kid you not). hua cheng and xie lian especially own my heart. i just.......love them so much i can't even explain it. hua cheng invented yearning, there's no doubt about that. well, i can't blame him for pining over xie lian for so long because, i too, would wait eight centuries for him. i can't believe mxtx really gave me 800 years of pining im so !!!!!!!!

I KNOW IM JUST WORD VOMITING HERE NOW BUT WHO CARES IM JUST GLAD I FOUND ANOTHER MASTERPIECE TO OBSESS OVER. objectively, this novel is not without its flaws but i love it nonetheless. suddenly i feel something again thanks to tgcf. god bless. this brainrot will last for a long time. im sure of it.

(im sorry for this word vomit. tgcf deserves better but im sleep deprived so if you saw this sorry excuse for a review, no you didn't <3)

TL;DR: READ TGCF IT'S ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS YOU'LL EVER MAKE IN YOUR LIFE

notes: if you're interested in reading this one, i recommend watching the donghua first so you can have a visual reference of the characters and the setting before diving into the novel. also, the visuals are god tier. the op and ed perfectly encapsulate 800 years of yearning too. it's worth the watch!!

i believe in post-canon beefleaf. it is possible and it will happen
