this was definitely really good, a lot of what i didn't like comes down to personal taste. i just don't think books without more levity are going to get many five stars from me. i really liked the character arcs in this novel, and thought it was one of the strongest parts of this novel. the ya tropes used are all mostly very well-done versions of said tropes. the prose is really strong. the commandant was such a well written villain, and through the hatred that's developed for the commandant, there's also a very compelling reason to root against the empire. the violence that's portrayed in this novel isn't put in the story haphazardly, it all works to develop the world or characters, and is viewed with the proper gravity. however, i didn't vibe with the misogyny from elias, the love triangle, and was really frustrated with laia's blind trust of mazen. also way too many side characters...

DAMN NOW THIS IS A BOOK!!!

World building, pace and plot were amazing especially with tension but characters, it usually it takes a while to like them, but here I loved Laia ans Elias immediately.
Overall I love this book.
