3.5 Stars. Is this a fascinating or wonderful read? Nope. Is this a twisty, fun and cheeky novel? Sure is. The thrill is there, as is the pace. The term page turner exists for books like these. Quick, savvy, but not overly thought provoking; just a fun and enjoyable read.

Luke’s search for his identity and the danger he is unknowingly courting are at first compelling. The flashbacks are much less successful, because Follett doesn’t seem very interested in establishing his characters’ personalities and getting us interested in them. The latter parts of the book dealing with Luke’s unconvincingly rapid success at discovering his identity and what follows after suffer from the same problems.

I always enjoy reading Ken Follett. Some, like Pillars of the Earth, provoke a lot of thought. Others, like Code Zero, are great entertainment.

Writing was retry simple though the plot twists were fairly complicated; complicated enough to keep me reading despite the writing.
