This book certainly lives up to its name. It was funny, suspenseful, and well written. However I cannot in good conscience call anything that made me think “thank god that’s over” once I’ve put it down successful. It felt more like an action movie than a book, but if an action movie spit the same banal hellish freuidian viscera at you over and over again. The disgust just plateaus after a certain point. I didn’t like it, but I’m sure the things I didn’t like it for are things it did on purpose, so for what it was trying to be it was quite good.

I love the JDATE series, always funny, always gross. I love how Pargin plays with the unreliable narrator in all of his books, it makes John and Dave very realistic and hilarious. Also, the sense of dread that this book gave me
with the fucking concrete snowman
was incredible.

First read: Not my favorite John Dies book, but still pretty hilarious. I definitely enjoyed it and will read it many more times, I think. David Wong is an amazing author and he is really good at hitting that sweet spot of comedy horror I love.

Second read: I think I liked it a lot better the second time around. It's aged a bit better than the first two, though.
