It was very promising at the beginning and the premise was interesting, but I’m just bored at this point. I’ve heard it gets really good towards the end, but I’m just not feeling it. And I don’t think the conversations and “banter” between the main characters is good, so I’m not enjoying their relationship. And the plot has basically stalled.

I feel like this is a book that had a lot of potential and had some good ideas but the way it was executed wasn't exactly what I was expecting and I can't help but to be left a bit disappointed. I thought the beginning of the book was entertaining enough even if some of the writing wasn't my favorite, but I realize the more I read the book, the less I liked it. I felt like all the negatives began to stand out to me more the further I read in the book, and I feel like it overshadowed what I liked about the book. There were some good ideas I liked, but I feel like the author chose to focus on other plot points instead. The main character Arken is attending some sort of magical university or school but the author and I feel like the author didn't focus too much on the actually schooling besides a bit in the beginning and sure Arken does train some with Kieran but I feel like that storyline had more potential. Another plot point that I feel deserved more attention was the mystery of the missing children. Kieran was supposed to be investigating the youths that went missing but nothing was ever resolved and it wasbt mentioned towarda the end of the book and that was one of the storylines I was interested in the beginning of the book. I did enjoy the main characters, Arken and Kieran, in the beginning, and I quite enjoyed the banter between the two, but I feel like there were some things that really irked me about their relationship as well. I liked that they formed a strong friendship first, and I happen to be a big fan of friends to lovers romances and feel like they are a bit underrated. One thing I did learn while reading this book is that I hate reading about characters having flings with people other than their intended love interest. I'm not sure if this never came up in other books I've read or it just really bothered me in this book but both Arken and Kieran either have sexual encounters with other people or talk about their numerous sexual encounters with other people and while there aren't explicit scenes, it just bothered me to read. I also have to say that I feel like it took forever for the two of them to get together and sure a good slow burn can be fun but I feel like by the time they got together, I just didn't care about them anymore. I also didn't really enjoy the smutty scenes between the two of them all that much. I think maybe it was just a little too rough for my taste and there's a sex scene that spans at least four chapters and personally, unless I'm really invested in the couple, that's just too much for me. It just wasn't for my tastes, but I'm sure others would love. I have to say that I was pretty undecided as to whether I would continue this series or not up until the end. I didn't like the end and the way that Kieran pushed Arken away. He was doing that whole cliché thing of pushing his love interest away as a means to protect her, but I think he took it way too far. I think the reason I feel this way is because they weren't just lovers, they became best friends first, and that's why what he said and did to Arken felt worse than what I usually read. He didn't just break things off, he destroyed their friendship, and I don't know how he could come back from that, and it didn't make me want to keep reading the series. I think I'm probably going to pass on keeping up with this series because while it had a lot interesting ideas and potential, I just didn't like the way everything was executed and I feel like it failed to love up to my expectations.

This book was everything I’m looking for in a story. The relationship between the two main characters feels authentic. They are strong but also vulnerable, and they deeply care for each other.

I read the word “aether” 4828272 times in the first few chapters. It was already repetitive so I couldn’t put myself through it
