Solid 5 stars. When Mia Corvere loses her father in an uprising to overthrow the corrupt government, she decides to join the Our Mother of Blessed Murder order of assassins to become a Blade (the best of the best). This book is all about her training and decisions that she has to make to become strong and skilled enough to avenge her father's murder. The descriptions in this novel are amazing and thr characters are incredibly well-formed. It was recommended to me that I read this book as an aspiring fantasy writer and it did not disappoint. Word of warning, even though Mia is 16, this is NOT a YA novel! No surprise, there is death and its graphic, and there is also a love connection and it is somewhat graphic. But I still believe this is essential for anyone who wants to write fantasy.

While the voice actor did a great job I barely finished this book due to the plot.
It was finished only because it was sth. to listen to during walks.
Plot quite predictable and no suprises on my side.
I liked the concept and the shadow animals but I am not intruged to continue with the series.
Also it continued quite some unecessary detailed sex and cruelty scenes.

I’m a little divided on this book.

I really liked the general concept; a school to train assassins. Next to that I loved the Italian influences that kept peeking in and the characters, the way they were quite clear and put up.
The world-building was okay, could’ve been a bit better I think, and it took a little too long for me to get to the point of where it was hard to put the book down (but I did get there, so POINT).
The way the ending closed up, I’m content not continuing the series and leaving it with this book. As much as happened at the ending, I don’t feel the need to read the rest.

I would have given this book 5 stars, but the beginning felt like a really long intro and took awhile to get going imo

USA said it well,
"Harry Potter meets The Lies of Locke Lamora."
And from my 5 star review of The Lies of Locke Lamora, I say that Nevernight is absolutely a story-sibling to Lynch's work while standing on its own and is a fantastic read. I devoured half the book in a day and am already shouting at Amazon to "take my money!" for the sequels.
For those who haven't read Lynch's book (which you should, if you enjoy Nevernight), this is a story of the brotherhood (and sisterhood!) of thieves, love in the dark, knowing what the dark is, and how to walk in Her shadow. Not for the faint of heart, this is a brilliant magical fantasy that will remind you of The Elder Scroll's Night Mother and Daedric Prince Nocturnal with every word. It is brilliant, emotional, tangible, and had me almost crying at a few spots.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff is far more detailed than I ever anticipated. This world is robust, well thought out, and incredibly complicated in all the best ways. I wouldn’t enter this series thinking it’s going to be a quick read. This is 100% a slow fantasy burn, but it is oh so worth it. It is strategic, dark, and twisty, which you can only expect of a group of would-be assassins. Kristoff masterfully depicts the complications of religion, politics, corruption, magic, world-specific language, and overwhelming emotion, all within this first book. I’m really excited to see where this series heads in the next two novels, but this is definitely a “chapter-at-a-time” read for me. If you decide to jump in to the world of Nevernight, get ready for one of the most complicated and intricate reads you’ve ever embarked on. Truthfully, Kristoff is giving GRRM a run for his money in terms of the amount of detail packed into these pages, and if you don’t believe me, you’ll just have to check these books out for yourself.
