I’ll admit, early on I was unsure how much I enjoyed the writing style, but it definitely grew on me. Also quite entertaining and easy to read during nightshifts.
And now I’m ordering the next one because I’m quite intrigued what will happen with Mia and her church of assassins.
Because I’m a fan of the school setting in most of its form in fantasy, I’m not entirely surprised to have enjoyed this one..

Amazing story but awfully written. Will not buy the next book.
Utterly surprising and surprisingly vicious. Notes of The Emperor's Blades and Gentlemen Bastards. Mia is an unforgettable narrator.
This was really excellent. There were a couple of points where I was worried it was going to fall into a Name of the Wind like trope, where plucky underdog main character fights to get in to some school, only to be thwarted at every turn by a professor/fellow student who takes an intense dislike to them. Although some of those elements are there, it doesn't feel like the same tropes, and I really enjoyed the story. Also, be sure to read the footnotes, because they are really quite funny.
Also, there were a couple of surprisingly explicit sex scenes for something that is supposed to be a young adult novel. I think the only thing that makes this young adult is the age of the protagonist.

Totally sucked me in, I read like 2/3 of it in a day. I really like his writing style and the use of footnotes. The darkin/familiar/snarky shadow cat buddy concept is so perfect for me, I ate that up. I really liked the world too, he made it deep and interesting without really lore dumping. Trials were cool, intrigue was cool, characters were cool, there were just enough clues for me to guess some of the twist, which I was proud of. The only thing that took me out of it was that sometimes the violence became excessive like how is she killing 100 full grown fully trained soldiers with armor so easily and also she seems really OP right now, so we’ll see how the author deals with that. Also WHY IS MC 16 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😩

It took me a good few chapters to get into this. I found the footnotes a little annoying to begin with but it got better. I loved Mia and her relationship with Mister Kindly was awesome.
Really enjoyable read with lots of dark stuff which is totally my bag. I thought Kristoff did the sex scenes pretty good for a guy. Usually they’re very male centric but I was pleasantly surprised!
It wasn’t perfect but I gave it 5 stars anyway because after the first few chapters I couldn’t put it down and I was sad when it was over. Super looking forward to reading Godsgrave.
