Wow. Just wow. That was freaking incredible.

I can't believe I put off reading this book for so long. It is worth all the hype and the praise.

Reading this book was an experience. I honestly wish I could just read this book for the first time again and again. It was freaking magnificent.

More thoughts at a reasonable hour.

But please read this god damned book, you'll not be disappointed.

********************************************

This book is so gloriously dark and unapologetic. Nothing is held back.

Mia is who she is and she won't change for anyone.

I loved reading her journey.

How determined she is and how although she has to go outside her comfort zone in order to achieve her goals, she also stays true to herself.

She will make an incredible Assassin, but that doesn't mean she has to lose every part of herself to get there. She doesn't need to lose her empathy and pity and comfort, she just needs to learn where to place it.

A lesson she learns very well throughout this leg of her journey.

Tric was a sweetheart. I loved him from the start. A bit of casual cunt-ing talk from Mia and Tric was besotted. Fucking brilliant.

In some ways he didn't belong there either. He was too warm, too caring. He didn't deserve his end.

Though I still have hope. No body means he could still be out there. I believe in him! Him and Mia were too cute.

I loved the magic and mystery of this world. The Speaker and Weaver were fucking creepy as shit but so intriguing. I loved their scenes, the descriptions of their powers and their ageless horror and beauty. Just magnificent.

Mister Kindly was a joy. Such a different spin on the animal companion. I really liked the fact that he was constantly referred to as the 'not-cat'. It wasn't ever simplified, we were reminded each time. Continuously dragging you deeper into the world.

The narrator was brilliant. Admittedly I was put off this book at the thought of footnotes. How pretentious it seemed. But they were honestly some of the best parts of this book.

It's a story about Mia, but she's not the one telling it (or is she? 😏). It has already happened and someone is relaying the tale as well as adding in their own snippets and comments along the way. Even simple information was expressed with such hilarity that I looked forward to when a new note would appear. I loved them. Really brought this world to life.

I can't believe I waited this long to pick up this series. I have thoroughly enioyed every minute I have spent thinking about this book and can't wait to start the next one. I already know Darkdawn is going to kill me but I'm going to walk headfirst into it anyway.

Highly recommend. Excellently done Jay, bravo.

Never flinch. Never fear. Never forget.

Nevernight was nothing short of amazing. The writing style did take me a while to adjust to, and the world building was intense for the first 100 pages, but it picked up from that point on and DID NOT slow down.

Mia... Mia is such a brilliant MC. She’s insanely deadly but in the same breath, virtuous. She’s vengeful but caring and thoughtful in more ways than one. She is completely murderous, but not without cause. She’s dark but full of light. One of the many things I loved about Mia was that she CLUNG to the last shreds of humanity she had left and did not surrender it, even if it meant not becoming a blade. It was beautiful to see her grow into her own a little bit throughout this book. Her fighting scenes were my favorite scenes I’ve ever read. The writing style and the descriptions were so bloody wicked.

Tric. Oh my god Tric. I really loved their journey together and my heart is broken. I honestly cannot accept that he died like that, especially without so much as a goodbye to Mia. Things weren’t left on good terms and it breaks my heart to know he’s gone. I’m holding out hope that he’s somehow not dead :/

All in all, an epic start to an epic series.

At first I thought this book is a simple assassin school, which is already pretty damn cool, with a girl that falls in love trying to get revenge. BUT THEN SHIT HAPPENS: death, plot twists and lots and lots of blood. 10/10 would recommend reading and will now start Godsgrave ready to find out what happens next.

Ok so wOW, WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT.

This quickly became one of my favourites.

Murder, action, magic, Hogwarts-but-dark, witty one liners, awesome writing, and did I mention, HILARIOUS. Put that all together and you have a masterpiece of a book.

Mia is certainly a kick-ass protagonist who you can definitely root for, but also morally should probably not. But we still do, and that's okay. And gosh, her dynamic with Mister Kindly. 10 stars for Mister Kindly's existence.

Tric, I wasn't so obsessed with. I mean he was ok as far as ok went. I didn't hate him. I didn't particularly love him either. I found him boring. There, I said it.

The plot twist had me screaming. "ooohhhh aaaaAAAAA!!"

The Shahiids, Naev, Mecurio were very likeable.

I also admire the fact that our characters aren't very morally aligned. Yay for antiheroes!!!

I did have a minor problem with the, "HEY EVERYONE GETS TO BE EXTRA BEAUTIFUL." Let me state this where it should be clear: the concept of beauty doesn't work towards one set standard. That's not how any of this works. "Wow suddenly everyone's beautiful, which makes them 1000x better, duh." Yeah? No. Not at all. Raised all three of my eyebrows when I read about it.

*Also a little end note, Cassius, however rare we got to see him, was a favorite of mine. I was rooting for him. But, oh well. I was more saddened by his death than Tric's. So...
