Note that going purely by the stories I'd give it more a 4/5. Lovecraft is great. But this particular volume has a lot of typographical errors. Not just wrong letters, but wrong/missing words, even entire paragraphs missing. This is a known issue and they corrected it in later printings but the fact it even happened in the first place is a complete travesty and makes me wonder what the editors were doing.

I have found that I love the concepts and imagination of Lovecraft but usually hate the way he writes.

I'm a horror fan. However, as I have grown up mostly on sci-fi, I have missed a lot of classic horror stories. This collection was an interesting insight into the style of many authors. I recommended this book for everybody who needs to catch up on horror novels.

This is a truly massive book. On 1100 pages, you will find almost every single story from the master of atmospheric horror himself- H. P. Lovecraft. And of course, it is five stars and a huge recommendation, its H.P Lovecraft!

Stories are, more or less, chronically arranged, so you can witness Lovecraft perfecting his style throughout this collection. I would only warn newcomers as some of these stories are not finished, so this is more of the collection for us, experienced graveyard excavators.

Most notable is:
The Colour Out of Space - 5/5 - I think this one is one of Lovecraft's best works. It is just very juicy combinations of isolation, aliens and body horror that I still have goosebumps when I read this, even after several rereads.

Another five stars creations:
Dagon
Music of Erich Zann
Herbert West - Reanimator
The Rats In the Wall
The Call of Cthulhu
The Dunwich Horror
The Shadow Over Innsmouth
The Dreams in The Witch House
The Thing On The Doorstep

I'm sure that people would also put At The Mountains of Madness on this list, but it is always a bit disappointing to read this one. Lovecraft is, in this story, very Lovecraftian - which means that story is unbearably slow and the main characters are really stupid. It's a shame because this story expands Lovecraft lore, but it is really painful to read.

It also contains his "dream series" - stories like:
The White Ship
The Cats of Ulthar
The Strange High House in The Mist
The Silver Key
The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath
Through The Gates of The Silver Key
These are dark fantasies with many interconnecting characters and areas. It is not my favourite face of Lovecraft, but it was interesting to read these anyway.

I was also surprised when I read "In the Vault". I read it first in the Czech translation many years ago, and I had a good laugh as it is a very humorous, dark comedy. I expected something lighter now, but man oh man, the original is much more horror than comedy.

It's good because it's classic, but some of it is steeped in all the stuff that writers are advised not to do. What I mean is, it's old, and while reading it you can tell.

Take a shot every time you encounter random extreme racism or the word Cyclopean.

Lovecraftian horror doesn't seem to be what I like for now. Will try again at a later date

some of lovecraft stories are the best i ever read in the horror aspect, very good atmosphere..
some of his stories are dragging too long and some are just meh
a must read writer tho for every horror fan out there
you need to get used to the writing style and some of the words he is using, still recommend to read some of his more popular work tho !
