This book is extremely heavy in its content. A fantastic read/listen by all accounts, but it takes a lot to get through it if you're not fully prepared.

McCurdy spills her entire life (no kidding, I know) in a way that could be described as "absolutely unnerving." From her mothers cancer scare (and parading it for sympathy points), to her destructive childhood trying to please her mom by making McCurdy's life as pleasant to her mom as possible. Forced to act, sing, dance, audition for tv and movies, and be subjected to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse all in the name of a mother who wanted to be a "star" herself, but failed, only to put that burden on her daughter.

With revelations about Nickelodeon, various other stars, directors, and personalities; McCurdy takes you to the limit of what a memoir is expected to be, peels back the curtains, and shows everything for what it actually is. Absolute bullshit. Bullshit subjected to a young girl that never had a chance to just be a kid. And rarely much more at that.

This book tugs at everything in you. And between this and Maria Bamford's memoir, it's enough to never desire a moment in the spotlight. Not at that price.

Thank you, Jeanette, for sharing your experience and thoughts in such an earnest way.

The writing is amazing by the way, it completely sucks you in from page one.

Trigger warnings - highly detailed descriptions of child ab*se, eating d*sorder(s), vomiting, alcoholism, & emotional ab*se; minor descriptions of blood, weight discussion, body dysmorphia, etc.

Memoirs are not my usual genre when it comes to reading, however I felt particularly drawn to Jennette’s story told explicitly from her perspective - I am close to the same age as Jennette and had outgrown Nickelodeon by the time iCarly was coming to an end.

It is so incredibly brave for Jennette to tell her story in this way - raw and in great detail, with her signature humor guiding the reader/listener through many of the stages of grief on her path to healing. It’s also extremely brave of her to discuss details around her time at Nickelodeon, and I really hope other child stars see her success and do the same. It’s not easy putting this out there in the first place, but it’s even more difficult to face a gigantic corporation (and turn down almost half a million dollars to do so when you’re not a nepo baby). I do echo other reviewers’ thoughts here, it feels gross to rate someone else’s story about their traumatic childhood/career, but I truly believe this deserves a full five stars for the commitment to the story, delivery, & pacing.

Huge props to Jennette for telling her story, consequences be damned.
