Completely and daringly honest! I really loved how raw the emotions are. My favorite thing about the book is how the tone of voice changed over the years as Jennette grew up. It starts off in her childhood years and you can feel how naive and simple the words are.

It might be triggering to people who have dealt with eating disorders since it’s very descriptive in that area, but I appreciate that she spoke out so honestly about it all including her relationship with her narcissistic mother.

Jennette McCurdy’s autobiography guides its reader through the turmoil of her life starting from her sixth birthday until her late twenties. We read about her time as an actor and her friendships and dating life, but the focal point of the book, as the title so clearly suggests, is her relationship with her mother and the trauma it brought to her life.

We see many examples of abuse from her mother while reading from the point of view of a girl stuck in believing her mother was a good person. McCurdy describes her mother’s decision to force her into an acting career at an early age and her encouragement of eating disorders.

When her mom dies, we watch Jennette grapple with the pain of losing her best friend, while finally realizing just how much her mother had put her through.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it was very moving to hear McCurdy’s story and how she was able to find herself despite the awful circumstances she was put through during most of her life. I resonate deeply with the struggles she has with food and body image, it was great to read about her recovery!

This book made me feel all of the emotions. It made me laugh and it made me cry. It is so uplifting to read about the life of an amazing woman who was able to grow from her dark times. I am so happy Jennette is now thriving in a life she wants and loves!

Wow, what a read.
Jennette’s openness, vulnerability, and honesty was on display throughout the entire book. You can tell she did the work and did it the right way. This was an inspiring read to me both professionally and personally. Though it was difficult to read at times due to the content and triggers she discusses, it’s all there. She put herself out there and deserves any and all praise she receives.

I wish you the best in life Jennette.👏🏽

Wow. I remember watching Nickelodeon as a kid and thinking how cool it must be to star on these shows. While Jennette's story certainly isn't everyone's story, I don't think it's terribly uncommon. As stories come out, its becoming more and more common for young actors to have been through abuse to some degree. This book, and various other stories, have completely changed my POV surrounding childhood fame. Not a single person, especially a child, should have to experience this kind of trauma and abuse.

Everyone wants fame to some degree... but is it worth it?

It was so difficult to read about the abuse from her mother. Children trust and love so blindly. Its just cruel to take advantage of that and break down a child into something you wanted for yourself but never had. To imagine the amount of stress and burden Jennette was carrying at such a young age is a painful reminder that unfortunately there are family situations as bleak as hers. I hope through her recovery she is able to grow and show herself the unconditional love she gave to those who were not deserving
