Extremely easy to read, she really does describe abusive parents with the perfect mix of humor and seriousness.

Great book. A very dark life story about Jennettes terrible upbringing with an extremely controlling narcisistic mother. I couldn't stop reading it. To anyone reading this book who relates to her story, please read Dr. Ramani Durasulvas books about navigating narcissism. I highly recommend them.

pairs well w/ 🍷: I would put this book up there with Heavy by Kiese Laymon and Hunger by Roxane Gay in being great memoir books that really go into the eating disorders the authors struggled with. 

Thoughts

Jennette really is a good writer. It's really cool reading this and thinking about how she's finally doing the thing she wanted to do since she was young (but her mom discouraged). 

The first half of the book McCurdy lays out her life when her mom is alive, which mostly coincides with her acting career. With all that's being talked about re Nickelodian and "the Creator", I think this account is one of the most impactful bc it's her telling what she wants to say, vs a curated selection produced by someone else for whatever their own reasons are. There was a lot of difficult aspects to this first bit, like how good she was at crying on cue bc she was just so emotionally wrecked all the time. 
 
The second half of the book is about her recovery from an eating disorder but all throughout the book she talks about the decade + of those eating disorders.

I really appreciated this title and will be thinking about this for a while.

I'm sad Jeannette had to go through everything she experienced in her childhood & young adult life, but I'm glad she finally got the help she deserves and that she's healing and able to share her story with others. I also hope she continues writing cause she's a natural born storyteller and it's one of the things she loves to do and wasn't forced into. Highly recommend the audiobook, which she narrates herself.
