Everyone has been raving about this memoir since it came out. McCurdy was a Nickelodeon kid after my time, so I didn’t have any investment in her going into this book. But Nickelodeon kids are coming out with trauma tales in droves. I wasn’t aware McCurdy was raised Mormon, but that makes a lot of sense. If you have a bad relationship with a crazy mom, this is gonna trigger the shit out of you. Her mom was a manipulative and controlling stage mom from hell. I have a great relationship with my mom, and I was still stressed reading this. Her mom actually reminded me of a former coworker, who to this day is the worst human I’ve ever had the displeasure of knowing. I can tell McCurdy actually wrote this herself, which is a deviation from most celebrity memoirs. I appreciate that; I hate a celebrity book that is clearly ghostwritten with no credit to the real writer. A good read, worth it if it’s on your list.

This one hurt. The bleak rollercoaster of childhood trauma hurts to experience through Jennette’s words. I hope she’s found lasting happiness in her life now

Brutally honest, dark, the author's candor perfectly describes the complexity of mother-daughter relationships and the trauma associated with being a child actor
